SFGATE
SFGATE is a digital news website covering local news and culture in the San Francisco area.
It served as the online version of The San Francisco Chronicle (Left bias) until 2019, when the Chronicle and SFGATE "officially became two separately run entities with their own editorial staffs and independent newsrooms," according to SFGATE's website.
SFGATE was one of the earliest major market newspaper websites to be launched, having done so in 1994, at the time of The Newspaper Guild strike.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to restrict the use of smartphones in the state’s public schools, according to an article from Politico that was published Tuesday.
The announcement, made exclusively to Politico, comes a day after Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy argued in a New York Times op-ed that social media platforms are damaging enough to the mental health of adolescents that Congress should require the platforms to come with a warning label, similar to the ones you find on tobacco products.
“As the surgeon general affirmed, social media is harming the mental health of our youth,” Newsom, a Democrat, told Politico. “Building on legislation I signed in 2019, I look forward to working with the Legislature to restrict the use of smartphones during the school day. When children and teens are in school, they should be focused on their studies — not their screens.”
Newsom’s newest plan would be an expansion of a bill he signed in 2019, which encouraged schools to develop their own policies around restricting smartphone use. Though the governor did not go into specifics with Politico, and a request for comment sent to his office by SFGATE was not immediately returned, Newsom told the outlet he plans to work with the Democratic-controlled state legislature to pass a bill by the end of this legislative session, which concludes in August.
