Texas's gun laws are once again under a microscope after a deadly shooting inside a church Sunday.
During a Sunday service, Keith Thomas Kinnunen, 43, burst into the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, Texas, and shot and killed two people, before Jack Wilson - the church's head of security - shot him dead.
"The heroism today is unparalleled," said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.
In the hours since this incident, gun rights supporters have praised both Wilson and laws passed this past legislative session, expanding where license holders can carry their guns.
During the 2019 session, state lawmakers passed Senate Bill 535, and House Bills 302, 1078, 1177, and 1143.
Senate Bill 535 cleared up language, removing restrictions from license holders to carry guns inside churches and places of worship. In 2017, Attorney General Ken Paxton handed down a legal opinion stating licensed handgun owners can carry guns inside a church if the church did not already have signage up prohibiting that. This is in addition to SB 2065 passed in 2017, which waives state fees churches would have to pay by providing their own security team, which is what the West Freeway Church did.
“After the legislation was passed recently allowing or making it clear that you could carry in churches, their leadership and their, their current security team decided that they needed to train people in the congregation and that's exactly what they did," Paxton said.
