Three men flown by helicopter to the Alaska backcountry for a skiing trip are presumed dead after they were caught in a massive avalanche, authorities said Wednesday. The avalanche happened Tuesday afternoon in the Chugach Mountains near Girdwood, a small resort town about 40 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to the Alaska Department of Public Safety. The department said state wildlife troopers were alerted of the avalanche shortly after 5 p.m. local time. A preliminary investigation revealed that three heli-skiers were swept away by the avalanche at around 3:30 p.m.,...

Three heli-skiers caught in a large avalanche in the Alaska backcountry are feared dead. The skiers are believed to be buried between 40 and 100 feet deep after an avalanche near Girdwood around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Alaska Department of Public Safety said in a daily dispatch. They have not been recovered yet. Austin McDaniel, a spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers, told The Associated Press that "we do not believe that any of the three missing persons survived the avalanche." The avalanche happened near the West Fork of 20...

Three skiers on a helicopter trip to a remote Alaskan mountain range were caught in an avalanche and are presumed dead under snow nearly as deep as a 10-story building, Alaska State Troopers said Wednesday. If the deaths are confirmed it would be the deadliest U.S. avalanche since three climbers were killed in a slide in Washington's Cascade Mountains two years ago. While Alaska troopers have not been able to assess the site yet, "based on the information provided by the operator, unfortunately, we do not believe that any of...

BOSTON — When they played ā€œO Canadaā€ for the second time, there were no American fans left in the arena to boo. Instead, the Canadian team stood at the blue line, arm in arm, player and coach, wearing their championship hats while the maple leaf flag was lowered behind the 4 Nations Face-Off trophy and the national anthem reverberated across the Americans' home ice. The fans who remained, many of them in their red Team Canada jerseys, sang along. Connor McDavid scored at 8:18 of overtime to give Canada a...

The battle over what to call North America’s highest peak has entered the U.S. Senate as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) introduced a bill Thursday that, if passed, would overturn President Donald Trump’s executive order that reverted the Denali name back to Mount McKinley. ā€œIn Alaska, it’s Denali,ā€ Sen. Murkowski said in a news release. ā€œOnce you see it in person, and take in the majesty of its size and breathe in its cold air, you can understand why the Koyukon Athabascans referred to it as ā€˜The Great One.’ On Jan....

Dear Eric: I belong to a small book club that now comprises six older women. All of us have been with the group for more than 30 years. For the most part, we all get along and enjoy the variety of books that are selected to be read each year. We have one member who is very opinionated about everything and does not hesitate to let her thoughts be known to us all. Often, she snaps and uses a tone that is loud and unyielding to any other perspective or...

ā€œPalestine is not just an idea—it is a place. It is a homeland to the Palestinian people,ā€ the coalition wrote. A coalition of over 100 organizations on Monday forcefully denounced U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to ethnically cleanse the Gaza Strip of Palestinians and take over the coastal enclave recently decimated by an Israeli military campaign conducted with American weapons. Led by A New Policy—a group founded by Biden administration officials who resigned in protest—and the Quaker organization Friends Committee on National Legislation, the coalition said that ā€œwe are deeply...

A beloved school counselor killed on the small airplane that initially went missing before crashing on sea ice off in Alaska was on her way to pick up students for ā€œcollege tours.ā€ Carol Mendiola Mooers, 48 — one of the 10 victims aboard the doomed Bering Air Flight last week — was a school counselor for the Unalakleet School in Alaska and ā€œon her way to go pick up students to take on college tours in Juneau and Anchorageā€ when the plane crashed, a fundraising page set up by her...

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. All of the passengers aboard the Bering Air flight that went missing on Thursday and later crashed have been recovered and identified by the Alaskan authorities. This incident marks the third major aviation accident in the United States in just over a week, raising fresh concerns about flight safety as investigators work to determine what caused the crash.
