Northern New England, including some parts of the Boston area, was shaken by a small earthquake that rumbled just off the coast of Maine on Monday morning.

The quake measured 3.8 magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey. It will likely be followed by smaller aftershocks in the coming hours and days, said Jessica Turner, a USGS geophysicist. The temblor was centered about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from York Harbor, Maine, at 10:22 a.m.

A 3.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Maine rattled residents from Boston to Connecticut on Monday. The 10:22 a.m. quake was centered about six miles southeast of York Harbor, Maine, about eight miles down, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - An earthquake centered in Maine Monday morning sent shockwaves throughout the Northeast.

The USGS says the quake took place at 10:22 a.m. and was centered in York Harbor, Maine. It had a magnitude of 3.9.

WCAX viewers say it was felt as far away as East Thetford and Waitsfield and lasted several seconds.

In New Hampshire, emergency management officials say 911 did not receive any immediate calls about damage or injuries.

Residents across Massachusetts reported feeling an earthquake Monday morning, with indications that it originated off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine.

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.9 quake about 12 miles east of Portsmouth, N.H., at 10:22 a.m.

The tremors were felt from Boston to Springfield, people in the cities said.

According to the USGS, the quake occurred at a depth of about 12 miles.
