California students didn't see much improvement in math and reading scores last year, despite renewed attention to boosting proficiency rates, according to a new national education report. Why it matters: The findings reflect a learning loss trend exacerbated by the pandemic. Gaps between high- and low-achieving students have also widened. State of play: California fourth graders scored "significantly lower" than the national average in math, while their reading scores were on par, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

Over several years, Louisiana has methodically revamped how kids are taught to read. Now, the work appears to be paying off: While students in nearly every other state made little to no reading progress on a national exam, Louisiana’s fourth graders made unprecedented gains. The state’s fourth graders jumped 26 spots in the national rankings, landing at 16th place based on their reading scores on the assessment known as the “nation’s report card,” which they took last year. For the second time, Louisiana’s fourth graders led the nation in reading...

Delaware made some improvement in 4th grade mathematics, but still lags well behind other states in reading, according to national data. The 2024 Nation's Report Card was released, taking in data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. 35% of Delaware's 4th graders were assessed to be "at or above Proficient" for 4th grade mathematics, up from 26% in 2022, but still 4% below the pre-pandemic-level, and the state's second-lowest score since 2005. Going back to 1992, Delaware has generally been within a percentage or two of the national average...

More than half of fourth graders nationwide have not mastered reading at a proficient level for their grade, and the share of students considered proficient is now 2 percentage points lower than two years earlier, new data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress shows. “The data shows that the majority of the nation’s school systems have failed to master effective reading instruction, ignoring not only how it should be taught (e.g., proven science) but also the importance of engaging students with rich content and literature that stimulates the mind...

The National Assessment of Educational Progress taken by about 8,000 students statewide last year showed Nebraska students are continuing to underperform in reading, with scores at all levels dropping by several points in 2024, but remaining competitive with other states. The test, also known as the Nation’s Report Card, is administered to fourth and eighth grade students across the nation every few years, and assesses students’ proficiency in both math and reading. Students took the assessment between January and March of 2024.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) - A report released Wednesday morning from the Nation's Report Card shows scores from students in 4th and 8th grade across the nation are struggling to bounce back to pre-pandemic levels. Here are the numbers on scores in mathematics. Nationwide, 4th-grade students slightly increased scores in mathematics versus the 2022 scores. In Colorado, 4th-grade students have improved by 2 percent compared to the 2022 scores, bringing them back to the level the state reached in 2003. 8th-grade students in Colorado improved in mathematics compared to...

The Nation’s 2024 Report Card published by the National Center for Education Statistics shows there is a lot of work to be done in classrooms across the country. The Nation’s Report Card includes the testing results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NEAP) which evaluates math and reading levels in fourth and eighth grade students. Overall, the latest report shows students are scoring low in math and reading and in some states, there have been minimal improvements. However, most states show no significant change in both subjects and grades....

PHOENIX (AZFamily/AP) — Arizona and the nation’s children have continued to lose ground on reading skills in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and have made little-to-no improvement in math, according to the latest results of an exam known as the nation’s report card. Arizona was among the states that saw reading scores fall in 2024, which was also the first to return to the classroom during the pandemic. The data also shows that math scores also fell between 2022 and 2024 among the Arizona students. “The entire country has...
