The Biden administration plans to provide more than $1 billion in weapons and ammunition to Israel.

For Context: This follows the administration's recent decision to pause the shipment of some heavy bombs due to concerns about their potential use in Rafah. Last week, President Joe Biden warned Israel that the U.S. would stop supplying offensive weapons to Israel if the country went ahead with its planned invasion of Rafah, the southern city in Gaza where over a million Palestinians are reportedly sheltered. Israel has agreed not to undertake any major actions in Rafah without notifying Washington.

The Details: The weapons package reportedly includes roughly $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles, and $60 million in mortar rounds. It remains unclear whether the bombs previously paused are included in this package. The proposed transfer will undergo a congressional review before approval.

How the Media Covered It: The Daily Beast (Left bias) highlighted the seeming contradiction in Biden's actions, noting the White House's recent pause of a bomb shipment over concerns for civilians in Rafah. The Wall Street Journal (Center bias), which first reported the story, noted that this weapons shipment could take “years” to reach Israel and stated the move “underscored the Biden administration’s reluctance to deepen its rift with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.” Coverage from the National Review (Right bias) included little context regarding Biden’s warning to Israel regarding Rafah, identifying the city as “Hamas’s last major outpost.” This summary was developed with the help of AllSides' AI technology.

The Biden administration notified Congress on Tuesday that it was moving forward with more than $1 billion in new weapons deals for Israel, U.S. and congressional officials said, a massive arms package less than a week after the White House paused a shipment of bombs over a planned Israeli assault on Rafah.

The latest weapons package includes the potential transfer of $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles and $60 million in mortar rounds, the officials said. There are still additional steps before the weapons would be approved and delivered.

The Biden administration is moving ahead with plans to send another $1 billion in weapons and ammo to Israel, according to numerous reports citing congressional officials. The move comes just days after the White House paused a shipment of bombs, citing concerns for civilians in the Gaza city of Rafah. The new package reportedly includes about $700 million for tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles, and $60 million in mortar rounds. It was not immediately clear when the shipment would be sent, but officials cited by The Wall Street...
