The "red wave" predicted by many in the 2022 midterm elections has yet to materialize, as Democrats flipped a key Senate seat and many other races remain too close to call.

Senate Races: Democrat John Fetterman is projected to beat Republican Mehmet Oz to fill Pennsylvania's vacant Senate seat, an important win for Democrats as they seek to maintain their Senate majority. The competitive contest in Georgia between incumbent Raphael Warnock (D) and Herschel Walker (R) is heading to a runoff, since neither candidate won 50% of the vote. In Wisconsin, incumbent Ron Johnson (R) is projected to beat challenger Mandela Barnes (D). it's too early to call other key Senate contests in Arizona and Nevada, and it may be several days before results are clear.

House Races: Control of the House of Representatives also remains unclear, but Republicans are expected to emerge with a majority. In Virginia, incumbent Democrat Rep. Elaine Luria, a member of the House Jan. 6 committee, is projected to lose to Republican challenger Jen Kiggans. In Texas, Republican Rep. Mayra Flores, who recently won a special election, is projected to lose to Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez.

Gubernatorial Races: In battleground states, Democrats won governors’ races in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and Republicans won governors’ races in Florida, Texas, and Georgia.

Control of Congress still hangs in the balance as of Wednesday afternoon, as some competitive House contests remain uncalled and three Senate races are outstanding.

The big picture: Republicans are leading the race for control of the House, but a number of toss-ups are still up for grabs. The razor-thin battle for control of the Senate has winnowed to three key races — Arizona, Georgia and Nevada.

The midterm elections did not go the way many were expecting, and there are several races that have yet to be called.

Many were expecting a red wave on Tuesday night, though it failed to materialize, and the Democrats ended up performing better than expected. However, for many races, the election is ongoing, and the winners of said races may take some time before being declared.

The morning after Election Day in the 2022 midterms, control of the Senate remains a toss-up. As of Wednesday afternoon, Democrats had secured 48 seats and Republicans had 49 seats, with four races yet to be called, CBS News projects.

The Georgia race will go to a runoff in December between Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker, after neither cleared 50%. CBS News characterizes Nevada as a toss-up, and Arizona as leaning Democrat.
