As U.S. media focuses on high-profile Gaza protests, diplomats are working behind the scenes on agreements that aim to establish peace in the Middle East.
The Details: While Hamas considers an Egypt-brokered Israeli ceasefire agreement, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia are reportedly finalizing a bilateral defense agreement including normalization with Israel, and Israeli officials are considering proposals for power-sharing with Arab states in post-war Gaza.
For Context: The diplomatic push, reportedly “beginning to gather pace,” revives some of the proposals that had been discussed before Hamas’ October 7 attack. President Joe Biden has previously said Hamas’ attack was intended to disrupt the potential normalization of ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which some argued would have left Palestinians behind.
