Karmelo Anthony has been released from jail on a reduced bail of $250,000, down from the original $1 million, and placed under house arrest awaiting trial for the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf.
The Details: Anthony, a high school student, has been facing first-degree murder charges following the stabbing of fellow student Metcalf during a track meet earlier this month. His release comes after his lawyers argued that Anthony had no prior criminal history and the bail amount was unnecessarily high. They also suggested house arrest with an ankle monitor. Anthony will now be required to check in weekly with the judge's bailiff and is prohibited from using social media.
For Context: Anthony’s attorney initially requested bail be lowered to $150,000. Anthony’s family has raised around $450,000 to help “combat” a “false narrative,” and his father has now said “the cash would be used for security and to help the family move after the threats” they’ve faced. Metcalf’s family has also raised over $360,000 online. Some misinformation has swirled online, such as a fake autopsy, and the Frisco Police Department and the FBI are reportedly investigating the information.
How The Media Covered It: CBS News (Lean Left bias) highlighted the surge in misinformation surrounding the case, adding that Meta's policy ending the use of third-party fact checkers may have contributed to the false information. The Post Millennial (Right) framed the story from the angle that the Anthonys were using the raised money to buy a new house, which some other outlets from the right did as well, though others framed headlines only around his lowered bond and release. Newsweek (Center) highlighted pro-Trump voices who were angered at Anthony’s release.
