A 17-year-old unaccompanied migrant child from Honduras died on Wednesday while in U.S. custody in Florida.

The Details: The Department of Health and Human Services acknowledged the incident, which occurred at a migrant shelter funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Honduran foreign affairs secretary Enrique Reina identified the child by name and called for an “exhaustive investigation.” Local law enforcement said it was investigating the case; a local investigator said the child died after being taken to Mease Countryside Hospital.

For Context: It was not immediately clear whether the incident was or was not related to the influx of migrant border crossings that came ahead of the end of Title 42 asylum restrictions. CBS News (Lean Left bias) reported there were 8,681 migrant children in ORR custody on Wednesday. However, according to the Tampa Bay Times (Center bias), Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration stopped licensing shelters that housed migrant children after a dispute with the federal government.

How the Media Covered It: Coverage was prominently featured in some outlets across the spectrum on Friday. Right-rated outlets tended to emphasize a possible connection to the end of Title 42. On its homepage, Fox News (Right bias) featured the story with photos of migrant crowds and the tagline, “DEADLY CRISIS.” Furthermore, while Fox emphasized that President Joe Biden had called migrant child deaths “unacceptable” — implying a failure to meet his own standards — the Daily Beast (Left bias) emphasized that this was the second migrant death in an ORR shelter ever.

A 17-year-old boy living in a Safety Harbor shelter for unaccompanied migrant children died on Wednesday after being transferred to Mease Countryside Hospital, according to Bill Pellan, director of investigations for the District Six Medical Examiner Office.

Pellan said further details of the boy’s death could not be released due to the ongoing investigation. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the active case and declined to release records.

A 17-year-old migrant child from Honduras who arrived in the U.S. without a parent or guardian has died in government custody in Florida, officials said Friday, in what is believed to be the first such death in years.

Enrique Reina, the Honduran secretary of foreign affairs, identified the child as Ángel Eduardo Maradiaga Espinoza and called for an "exhaustive investigation" into his death. Reina said the child was being held at a shelter used to house unaccompanied children in Safety Harbor, Florida, a small city west of Tampa.

The Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the death of a migrant child in U.S. custody.

The department released a statement on Friday regarding the death of the child, but did not reveal where the child died.

"The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our heart goes out to the family, with whom we are in touch," it said.
