Chinese officials said this week that the U.S. "should be held responsible for any serious consequences" stemming from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) potential trip to Taiwan

Pelosi hasn't set a date for the trip, but said last week that it was "important for us to show support for Taiwan." President Joe Biden said he thinks that the military doesn't think the trip is "a good idea right now." Some prominent Republicans, such as former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, voiced support for the trip as a way to discourage China from trying to occupy Taiwan by force. China's foreign ministry responded to the discourse, saying that if the U.S. "is bent on going its own way, China will take strong measures to resolutely respond and counteract." China's government claims Taiwan as its own territory, while Taiwan's government sees itself as a sovereign, independent country. The U.S. maintains "strategic ambiguity" toward the dispute, and recognizes the People's Republic of China's view of itself as the sole legal government of China, which includes Taiwan. Meanwhile, the U.S. maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan, and some U.S. lawmakers and politicians openly advocate for Taiwan's independence from China.

Sources across the spectrum highlighted China's warnings, the Biden administration's caution, some Republicans' support for the trip, and fears that a visit could provoke a military response from China. Many reports and analysts also highlighted Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, and speculated that China could try something similar in Taiwan.

Plans for Nancy Pelosi, the US House speaker, to visit Taiwan have prompted opposition from China and the American military but support from Republicans in Washington, including former members of the Trump administration.

Trump’s second secretary of defense, Mark Esper, told CNN: “I think if the speaker wants to go, she should go.”

Mike Pompeo, Trump’s second secretary of state, tweeted: “Nancy, I’ll go with you. I’m banned in China, but not freedom-loving Taiwan. See you there!”

China has ratcheted up warnings to the US about a planned trip to Taiwan in August by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, even suggesting a possible military response, according to new reports.

The behind-the-scenes rhetoric was significantly stronger than the threats Beijing has made previously regarding US interaction with Taiwan, the Financial Times first reported Sunday, citing six people familiar with the private message to the Biden administration.

The warning signaled a possible military response, the Financial Times said.

Apotential visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is stirring alarm in President Joe Biden's administration which fears the trip may cross red lines for China -- and that there is no exit path.

China on Monday warned it was "getting ready" for a Pelosi visit to the self-ruling island next month and that the United States would "bear all responsibility for all serious consequences" if she goes.
