Two journalists, Hamza Dahdouh of Al Jazeera (Lean Left bias) and freelancer Mustafa Tharaya, were killed by an IDF airstrike on Sunday.
The Details: The IDF said the two were in a vehicle with “a terrorist who operated an aircraft that posed a threat to IDF troops.” A third journalist, Hazem Rajab, was seriously wounded.
For Context: Dahdouh was the son of Al Jazeera bureau chief Wael al-Dahdouh, who lost four other family members to Israeli airstrikes in October.
Key Quotes: Al Jazeera said, “The assassination… reaffirms the need to take immediate necessary legal measures against the occupation forces to ensure that there is no impunity.” Senior Israeli adviser Mark Regev told BBC (Center bias), "To say Israel deliberately targets the press is ridiculous, we're the only country that actually enshrines the free press." U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is traveling the region, said “This is an unimaginable tragedy and that’s also been the case for far too many innocent Palestinian men, women, children.”
How The Media Covered It: The story was mostly covered by the center and left. Despite being updated on Jan. 8, The Associated Press (Lean Left bias) report didn’t mention the IDF’s statement. It also said two additional journalists, Amer Abu Amr and Ahmed al-Bursh, survived the strike. Al Jazeera’s reporting suggests only three journalists were present. Al Jazeera also published an opinion labeled as an analysis, saying the IDF’s statement “doesn’t add up.” Breitbart (Right bias) accused Al Jazeera of airing “anti-Israel propaganda."
