The CEOs of National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) appeared before a House subcommittee Wednesday to defend against Republican lawmakers' accusations of political bias.
The Details: Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene led the hearing, titled "Anti-American Airwaves: Holding the Heads of NPR and PBS Accountable." She has previously stated her desire to cut all federal funding to public broadcasting. Greene criticized PBS CEO Paula Kerger and NPR CEO Katherine Maher for what she perceived as leaning too far to the left and accused them of using taxpayer funds to push radical positions. Representative Brandon Gill (R-TX) also questioned Maher regarding her Twitter feed, where she posted about America being addicted to white supremacy, responding that her thinking has evolved since then. On the other hand, Maher admitted to a mistake in the network's dismissal of the Hunter Biden laptop story.
For Context: Public broadcasting in the United States, including NPR and PBS, receives federal funding. The decision to fund these entities is often a point of contention, with critics arguing that taxpayer money shouldn't support media outlets, especially if perceived bias is present.
How the Media Covered It: CNN (Lean Left bias) focused on Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's criticisms of NPR and PBS, highlighting her labeling of the media outlets as 'communist' and her call for their funding to end. Fox News (Right) reported on NPR's admission of a mistake in dismissing the Hunter Biden laptop story, framing it as a confirmation of bias. The outlet also covered Greene's questioning of Maher's personal views during the hearing. NPR (Lean Left) reported on the hearing from a more defensive standpoint, emphasizing the CEOs' efforts to defend their organizations against the allegations of bias.
