Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) announced Thursday that he would run for the Senate seat Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) held for the last three decades. 

For Context: Feinstein, 89, has not announced plans to retire in 2024 despite widespread concerns about her age; an anonymous member of Congress told the San Francisco Chronicle (Left bias) in April 2022 that they were concerned about her mental fitness. Schiff is not the first Democrat to announce a run to replace Feinstein; Progressive Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) announced she would run for the seat on January 10, and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) reportedly privately told colleagues she intended to join the race. All of this happened less than 80 days after Election Day 2022 — and over 649 days before the 2024 election.

However, Pompeo later said, “it’s difficult to pin down precisely what happened,” and Schiff’s spokesperson called the statement “patently false and defamatory.”

How the Media Covered It: Coverage was widespread across the spectrum; even entertainment outlet Variety (Center bias) picked up the story. However, coverage from the right tended to frame Schiff and Democrats negatively. A Fox News headline highlighted criticism from progressives over his purported “failed record on Trump.”
