The White House has announced that Susan Rice, director of the Domestic Policy Council, is stepping down from her post effective May 26.

Key Details: Rice, a longtime foreign-policy expert, served as U.N. Ambassador and National Security Advisor under President Barack Obama. Under President Joe Biden, Rice helped shaped many of the proposals that formed Biden's Build Back Better plan, and oversaw controversial issues such as migrant policies and gun control.

Key Quote: "As the only person to serve as both National Security Advisor and Domestic Policy Advisor, Susan's record of public service makes history," Biden said.

For Context: Rice came under criticism by Republicans after she initially characterized the deadly 2012 attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya as a "spontaneous protest" by extremists, rather than a premeditated terrorist attack.  Republicans have also accused her of spying on former President Donald Trump's first national security advisor, Michael Flynn.

How the Media Covered it: Sources across the political spectrum covered Rice's departure, with many noting that Rice was once thought to be on Biden's vice presidential short list.

Susan Rice, President Biden’s top domestic policy adviser, is departing the administration, the White House said Monday.

Ms. Rice, a longtime foreign-policy expert, has led the White House Domestic Policy Council since the start of the administration, helping coordinate with federal agencies on a broad variety of issues, including economic mobility, healthcare, gun control and immigration. Her last day will be May 26, an administration official said.

President Joe Biden’s domestic policy adviser, Susan Rice, is stepping down from her post next month, multiple current and former senior administration officials told NBC News.

The move brings to a close Rice’s prolific, wide-ranging and at times controversial tenure overseeing Biden’s domestic agenda — including some of the thorniest political issues, such as immigration policy. During her more than two years in the role, Biden has signed executive and legislative actions on health care, gun safety, student loans, policing and other key priorities for Democrats.

Susan Rice, President Joe Biden's top domestic policy adviser, is departing her post.

In a statement acknowledging Rice's exit, Biden remembered how he "surprised" pundits by tapping Rice for the position overseeing domestic affairs since she is "synonymous" with foreign policy, having previously been former President Barack Obama's national security adviser and ambassador to the United Nations.
