Former President Donald Trump joined X owner Elon Musk for a live chat on the platform Monday night that lasted roughly two hours.

The Details: The conversation’s start was initially delayed because of what Musk described as a “massive DDoS” attack. The two covered many topics, including the attempted assassination of Trump, immigration, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, and the economy.

For Context: Trump was previously banned from X (then Twitter, under different ownership), and his account was reinstated in November 2022 after Musk ran a poll asking whether the platform should do so. Before Monday, Trump had only posted once since he was banned in January 2021. Last month, Musk endorsed Trump for the upcoming election.

How The Media Covered It: Several outlets from the left and center, like The Guardian (Lean Left bias), Reuters (Center bias), and USA TODAY (Lean Left bias) described Trump as “rambling” in their headlines. Daily Mail (Right bias) also described Trump as “rambling” in a headline. Many outlets across the spectrum highlighted the technical difficulties faced as the chat kicked off. BBC News (Center bias) described the chat as “friendly.”

Donald Trump recounted his assassination attempt in vivid detail and promised the largest deportation in U.S. history during a high-profile return to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — a conversation that was plagued by technical glitches.

“If I had not turned my head, I would not be talking to you right now — as much as I like you,” Trump told X’s owner Elon Musk.

Musk, a former Trump critic, said the Republican nominee’s toughness, as demonstrated by his reaction to last month’s shooting, was critical for national security.

Former President Trump spoke Monday with Tesla founder Elon Musk on X, which Musk owns, marking Trump’s most significant return to the social media platform since he was reinstated in 2023.

Trump and Musk spoke for roughly two hours after their conversation was delayed because of technical issues that prevented many from initially joining. The two covered a range of topics, including the recent assassination attempt on Trump, his views on immigration and the economy, and the future of energy production. Musk has endorsed Trump in the 2024 campaign.
