Why it matters: The public split screen isn't new to many inside the White House, where top aides have meticulously stage-managed minutiae such as Biden's sleep schedule, his orthopedic shoes, his walks to Marine One and his climb aboard Air Force One to try to blunt concerns about his age.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who died yesterday at age 90, will be remembered for many things: Her rise to power following the assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the gay rights pioneer; her 30 years of service in the Senate, where she was the architect of the 1994 federal assault weapons ban and the 2014 report on torture in the Bush administration; and her shattering of numerous glass ceilings on what women, and Jews, could achieve in our country.

Trailblazing Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the longest-serving female senator in US history, died on Thursday night, according to a family member. She was 90 years old, and had been facing calls to step down, given her fragile health and declining memory.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, rest in peace. Whatever you think of her and her 31 years in the Senate, she was loved by a lot of people, and those people are hurting right now. We should all hope that God eases the grief of Feinstein’s friends, family, and supporters; perhaps they can find solace in the fact that Feinstein packed so many accomplishments into her 90 years. We only get one chance at life, and Feinstein made the most of hers.

If you think this was the result of a bitter culture war battle, think again.

Forget about draining the swamp.

It’s clear we have a more pressing matter in Washington, DC: We really need to fill the retirement homes.

Perhaps we should construct a pipeline that transports swamp dwellers of a certain age right to the pickleball court or golf course or hot tub, whatever Boomers get up to these days. I don’t judge.

Recently declared presidential candidate Nikki Haley last month called for cognitive mental tests for political candidates over the age of 75. President Joe Biden is already the first octogenarian president at 80 years old and would be 82 if he were to be sworn in for a second term. Former President Donald Trump is not far behind at 76. Haley, who is 51, knows that the possibility of such a requirement is remote, but she clearly wants to bring attention to an issue that many Americans already recognize – that many of the nation’s leaders are well past retirement age.

A perennial debate in American politics has been stirred up again: are our leaders in Washington too old, and if so, what should be done about it? The question has gained new significance as Joe Biden, already the oldest president in United States history at 80 years old, has officially launched his re-election campaign. At the moment, he is most likely headed for a rematch against Donald Trump, who turned 77 earlier this month.
