Nex Benedict, the 16-year-old Oklahoma student who died one day after a fight in a high school bathroom, died by suicide, the state's medical examiner said on Wednesday.

The summary report said that Benedict, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, died due to the combined toxicity of two different medications.

Virginia's largest school district will not be following the state's updated guidance regarding trans and non-binary identifying students. Fairfax County Public Schools announced Tuesday that students and staff will be expected to abide by its existing policy for the foreseeable future.

The new regulations, which were adopted in September 2022 under Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), require facilities and activities to be segregated based on biological sex, and do not mandate the use of preferred pronouns, as had previously been the case.

When North Dakota restricted what bathrooms transgender students can use in public schools and universities this year, the school district in the state’s largest city promised to ignore the new rules. A Republican legislator then called for confiscating its state funding, but the law doesn’t include that possibility.

The defiance in Fargo shows that it’s not exactly clear how bathroom laws will play out in local communities after being enacted in at least 10 states with Republican-controlled legislatures.

Two top Loudoun school officials have been indicted in the continued fallout from a state grand jury investigation into sexual assaults in the school system. One has already lost his job and the other has been placed on administrative leave.

The Massachusetts attorney general, Maura Healey, who is running for the gubernatorial nomination, issued a scathing reply to people uncomfortable with sharing a bathroom with a transgender person in 2016, telling them, ā€œIf you’ve got that much of a problem, hold it.ā€

Healey’s retort came in response to critics who slammed legislation that would have enabled transgender people to use a bathroom or locker room that fit their preferred gender identity.

Students at several Loudoun County Public Schools held 10-minute walkouts Tuesday morning to demand the county protect students from sexual assault and to declare solidarity with survivors.

At Broad Run High School in Ashburn, dozens of students walked out of their classrooms midmorning to demand the county make the public schools safer spaces. ā€œWe deserve to be safe,ā€ one student standing in front of the main entrance shouted.

Students walked out of classes at schools across Loudoun County, Va., on Tuesday in solidarity with victims of sexual assault in response to two recent incidents in the school district, Fox 5 D.C. reported.

On Monday, a judge found a teenage suspect guilty of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in a bathroom at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn in May, according to The Washington Post.
