Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr said Wednesday on Fox News that the guilty verdict in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s case would likely be “overruled” and could lead to people questioning the fairness of the 2024 presidential election.

Former US attorney general Bill Barr has spoken out against Donald Trump ahead of his court appearance for allegedly plotting to overturn his election defeat in 2020.

Mr Barr, who was appointed by the former president, said that Mr Trump "knew well he lost the election".

Mr Trump is accused by federal prosecutors of lying repeatedly about mass voter fraud and pressing officials to change results to keep him in power.

He will be formally charged later.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr on Wednesday undermined a key pillar of his old boss’ defense in the special counsel’s probe into 2020 election interference, telling CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that Donald Trump “knew well he lost the election.”

The former attorney general also described Trump’s alleged actions as detailed in the indictment as “nauseating” and “despicable,” saying on “The Source,” “someone who engaged in that kind of bullying about a process that is fundamental to our system and to our self-government shouldn’t be anywhere near the Oval Office.”

William Barr, the former US attorney general who served under Donald Trump, has said the ex-president is "toast" if allegations he mishandled classified documents are proven to be true.

Mr Barr criticised his former boss and said he had no right to keep the files allegedly found at his home.

Mr Trump will appear in court in Miami on Tuesday to face dozens of charges accusing him of illegally retaining classified information.

He has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr said Sunday he believes there’s a “very good chance” Donald Trump is indicted over the Mar-a-Lago documents case. 

During an appearance on ABC News’ “This Week,” Barr argued that federal prosecutors have “very good evidence” the former president obstructed justice.

He said the raid on Mar-a-Lago came after a “long period, about a year-and-a-half of trying to get the documents from him."

Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr said in an interview that aired Friday on PBS that his former boss, Donald Trump, should “stand aside” and forego his campaign for another presidential term because he doesn’t have what it takes.

Barr also said it appeared “increasingly more likely” that the Department of Justice will indict Trump for the hoard of classified documents from the White House that the FBI found stashed at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. And the Justice Department “probably” has what it needs for “legitimately indicting” him, Barr added.

The big picture: Barr's comments came hours after current Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a special counsel to oversee the federal criminal investigations into Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and handling of classified documents.
