Chicago police are investigating after two separate shootings overnight left more than a dozen people injured. In both incidents, police were responding to a call of a person shot when they discovered multiple victims had sustained gunshot wounds following an exchange of gunfire by two people that fled the scene. The first incident occurred just after midnight in the 1300 block of W. Hastings in the city's Little Village neighborhood, police said. On the week of her due date, Elibexis Alvarez, a Venezuelan migrant, was preparing to give birth to her first child far away from her parents and the home country she never thought she’d leave.

She and her husband, Johan Jose Medina, have spent the last four months living in temporary shelters in Chicago after fleeing escalating violence in Venezuela. They are part of the tens of thousands of migrants and asylum-seekers who have been bused north after being processed at the southern border over the last two years.

Buddhist monk Sutham Nateetong carried nothing more than a backpack during his 3,000-mile journey along Route 66.

He walked through Tulsa five years ago today, aiming to travel the old highway to its terminus in Chicago before heading to New York.

“When I walk, I meditate some more and send love and kindness to everybody,” Nateetong said.

Nateetong said he was walking “for peace.”

“I think if our world has peace, then everybody be happy,” he said.

The police crackdown on peaceful student protesters continues across the country. In Illinois, police cleared an encampment at the University of Chicago. Here in New York, police forces raided a protest camp at the Fashion Institute of Technology and arrested dozens of protesters Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in Europe, police arrested more than 100 activists at the University of Amsterdam. Police also dismantled an encampment at Berlin’s Free University.
