Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat and his party’s top leader on the Judiciary Committee, announced Wednesday that he won’t seek a sixth term in 2026.

ā€œI know in my heart it’s time to pass the torch,ā€ the veteran senator said in a social media post Wednesday.

Durbin, who is 80, confirmed what many Democrats have expected for months — that the veteran senator would step aside after three decades in office.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he plans to oppose the nomination of Kash Patel, President Trump’s nominee to lead the FBI. ā€œKash Patel has neither the experience, the temperament, nor the judgment to lead the FBI,ā€ Durbin said in a statement after a 30-minute meeting with Patel. ā€œMr. Patel’s political grievances make him a favorite of the MAGA world, but they have not prepared him to work night and day to keep us safe from violent crime, drug trafficking, terrorism, and other...

The committee voted along party lines on Nov. 30 to authorize subpoenas for Leo and Texas billionaire Harlan Crow following reports that Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr. accepted — and did not disclose — free luxury travel and gifts from Crow, Leo and conservative donor Robin Arkley II. ā€œI am not capitulating to his lawless support of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and the left’s dark money effort to silence and cancel political opposition,ā€ Leo said of Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, the committee’s chairman, in...

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin delivered a subpoena to conservative activist Leonard Leo on Thursday as part of the committee’s investigation into Leo’s interactions with Supreme Court justices. Democrats on the committee voted to authorize the subpoena in November as part of their probe into Supreme Court ethics over strong objections from Republicans, who called the move politically motivated. Leo indicated that he does not intend to comply with the subpoena, according to a letter his attorney sent to Durbin on Thursday.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senate leaders introduced legislation to end ā€œjudge shoppingā€ — a practice that’s made a federal courthouse in Amarillo with a Trump-appointed judge a destination for conservative litigants challenging Biden administration policies. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced the ā€œEnd Judge Shopping Actā€ on Wednesday, which would require judges to be randomly assigned to civil cases that could have state- or nation-wide consequences.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the No. 2 Senate Democrat, blasted the recent dress code easing for Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) ā€” and suggested the upper chamber ā€œneeds to act on this.ā€

ā€œI’m concerned about it. The senator in question from Pennsylvania is a personal friend, but I think we need to have standards,ā€ Durbin told ā€œThe Briefing with Steve Scullyā€ on SiriusXM in an interview airing Friday.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) confirmed the policy change Sunday, while insisting, ā€œI will continue to wear a suit.ā€

Justice Samuel Alito on Friday rejected a request by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) to recuse from a Supreme Court tax case after the conservative justice sat down for a pair of interviews with an attorney involved in the case.

Durbin and other Democrats had said Alito should not participate in the case Moore v. United States after the Wall Street Journal opinion section released two interviews featuring the justice.

In April 2023, reports emerged that Thomas had received gifts from GOP donor Harlan Crow and did not disclose some of them. These revelations have led to controversy regarding whether Thomas has committed ethical violations and what the ramifications should be.

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a leading Republican senator on Thursday re-introduced a bill that seeks to compel the Supreme Court to televise its open court sessions live.

In pushing for the bill’s approval, Judiciary Chair Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., cited the Supreme Court’s plummeting credibility with the public after recent controversial rulings on abortion and gun control.

It's another new Congress, which means another chance for Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to push for a matter that is counter to the conservative base of the Republican Party: amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Graham is teaming with Senate Judiciary Committee chair Dick Durbin, D-Ill., to introduce the DREAM Act of 2023, which would allow illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children who meet certain education or work requirements to earn permanent residence.
