Wegovy treated a serious form of liver disease in a major clinical trial
The weight loss drug Wegovy treated a serious form of liver disease in about two-thirds of patients in a major clinical trial, according to the findings published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease — previously known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease — affects about 33% of adults in the U.S. About 5% to 7% have a more advanced form of the disease, called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH.

China reveals how Covid originated after being accused of a cover-up
The Chinese government published a report on the Covid pandemic Wednesday claiming that the pandemic-causing coronavirus originated in the US, not China as many Americans argue. The white paper released by China's State Council Information Office argued that the virus likely originated in the US and caused infections well before the outbreaks in China began in earnest.
King Charles Gives Update on ‘Frightening’ Cancer Diagnosis
King Charles shared a touching update in his ongoing fight against cancer and what he’s learned from his diagnosis. The king wrote a message that was printed in a booklet and handed out during Buckingham Palace‘s reception for cancer charities and organizations Wednesday. He noted how 390,000 people receive a cancer diagnosis across the UK every year, meaning more than 1,000 a day, and understood how “daunting” and “frightening” of an experience it is to be diagnosed. “But as one among those statistics myself, I can vouch for the fact...
Humans heal 3 times slower than our closest animal relatives
New research suggests humans heal slower than our close relatives, though exactly why is unknown. Injuries may heal much more slowly in humans than they do in other mammals, including our closest primate cousins, scientists say. In a study published Tuesday (April 29) in the journal , researchers found that human wounds healed around three times more slowly than the same injuries in nonhuman , including chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), which, along with bonobos (Pan paniscus), are our nearest living relatives. This difference in healing rates between humans and chimps was...
A Culture of Pressure: How Modern Workplaces Are Fueling a Mental Health Crisis

Defined by the World Health Organization as “a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation,” stress is universal—but its intensity, its origins and our responses to it can vary wildly. According to a new Gallup report, 41 percent of employees said they experienced a lot of stress the previous day, with work experiences significantly contributing to daily emotions. Even more troubling, 20 percent reported feelings of loneliness, a number that spikes among remote workers. The modern...

A partially sighted mum and daughter have broken their own record for running a marathon. Lucette Crowhurst and her daughter Katie, from Maidenhead, Berkshire, had a combined time of eight hours, 17 minutes and 54 seconds at Sunday's London Marathon. This was the fastest marathon run by a mother and daughter in the impaired sight 1 (is1) classification. Lucette, who said she could see blurry colours but had no depth perception, ran with a guide runner, while 21-year-old para athlete Katie chose to go it alone, only using her mum's...
A landmark study of gender medicine is caught in an ethics row
O that transgender medicine is such a fraught topic is that there is little evidence behind the arguments. When Hilary Cass, a British paediatrician, reviewed the field for an influential report published in 2024, she noted that most of the science underlying the prescription of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to teenagers (an approach called “gender-affirming care”) was “remarkably weak”.
