Dr. Fauci has announced he plans to retire by the end of President Biden’s current term, which ends in January 2025.

The infectious-disease expert, who led the Biden administration’s Covid-response, confirmed the news to CNN Monday. He did not specify a departure date.

ā€œI have said that for a long time,ā€ Fauci told the outlet of his repeated teasings of retirement. ā€œBy the time we get to the end of Biden’s first term, I will very likely [retire].ā€

President Joe Biden is seeking $670 million from Congress in his discretionary proposal to end HIV/AIDS permanently, a total activists say is not enough.

"The last year of unfathomable human loss and health system collapse during colliding pandemics should have taught us the importance of investing in the human right to health, including making life-saving medicines available to all people, worldwide," Health GAP Director Matthew Rose said, according to The Hill.

Observed every December 1, World AIDS Day is a grim reminder that while we’re trying to constrain COVID-19, humanity is still in the midst of multiple pandemics—and one of them has already killed about 33 million people over four decades.

In 2019, according to UNAIDS, an estimated 38 million people were living with HIV globally and ā€œaround 690,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses worldwide.ā€ The encouraging news—as encouraging as such lethal news can be—is that 2019’s mortality marked a 60 percent reduction since 2004, the peak year of AIDS deaths.

"The single most important thing you can do politically for gay rights is to come out," declared Barney Frank, who in 1987 was the first member of Congress to exit the closet voluntarily. "Not to write a letter to your congressman, but to come out."

Everyone with HIV should be given anti-retroviral drugs as soon as possible after diagnosis, meaning 37 million people worldwide should be on treatment, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.

Recent clinical trials have confirmed that early drug use extends the lives of those with the AIDS-causing virus and cuts the risk of disease transmission to partners, the WHO said in a statement setting out the new goal for its 194 member states.
