Iran has denied involvement in a drone attack on a US base near Jordan's border with Syria that killed three US troops.

The US blamed the attack on "radical Iranian-backed militant groups" which also left dozens injured.

US President Biden vowed revenge and said: "We shall respond."

It is the first time that a strike has killed US troops in the region since Hamas's 7 October attack on Israel.

There have been other attacks on US bases in the region, but before Sunday there were no fatalities, according to the US military.

Tehran has denied any involvement in a drone strike that killed three US troops at a base in Jordan, near the border with Syria, after US President Joe Biden blamed Iran-backed militia and vowed revenge.

In a statement published by the state news agency Irna, Tehran’s UN mission said: “Iran had no connection and had nothing to do with the attack on the US base,” adding: “There is a conflict between US forces and resistance groups in the region, which reciprocate retaliatory attacks.”

A missile fired by Iran-backed Houthis struck an oil tanker sailing in the Gulf of Aden late Friday night, U.S. officials said, and American forces quickly responded with another round of airstrikes targeting the rebel group in Yemen.

U.S. Central Command said the Houthi anti-ship missile struck the Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker M/V Marlin Luanda. The ship was damaged and its crew issued a distress call, CENTCOM said. No injuries were reported. U.S. and other allied ships in the area responded to the distress call.

The United States and Britain carried out large-scale military strikes on Monday against eight sites in Yemen controlled by Houthi militants, according to the two countries. The strikes signaled that the Biden administration intends to wage a sustained and, at least for now, open-ended campaign against the Iran-backed group that has disrupted traffic in vital international sea lanes.

The U.S. military has ended its search for two Navy SEALs lost at sea during a mission to intercept Iranian weapons bound for militants in Yemen, officials said on Sunday, underscoring the risks to the United States of spiraling violence across the Middle East amid Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.

U.S. Central Command said the two elite service members had not been located during a 10-day search and rescue operation.

“Their status has been changed to deceased,” the command said in a statement. “We are now conducting recovery operations."

Two U.S. Navy SEALs who went missing in the Gulf of Aden earlier this month during a raid on a boat carrying Iranian weapons have not been located following an exhaustive search and their status has been changed to deceased, military officials said on Sunday.

The SEALs were reported missing after boarding the vessel in a Jan. 11 operation near the coast of Somali, the U.S. Central Command said on X.

A search for two U.S. Navy SEALs who went missing at sea off the coast of Somalia this month has been called off, U.S. Central Command said Sunday.

The SEALs had been on a mission chasing shipments of Iranian-made weapons bound for Houthi rebels in Yemen. A U.S. official previously confirmed to Fox News Digital that the SEALs were attempting to board a ship they suspected was falsely flagged that could be smuggling weapons.

The US is set to re-designate Yemen's Houthi rebels as "global terrorist", senior Biden administration officials have said.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken will approve the move amid ongoing attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed group.

The move will require US financial institutions to freeze Houthi funds and its members will be banned from the US.

It reverses Mr Blinken's 2021 decision to remove the Houthis from the list.
