President Joe Biden’s administration is expected to re-designate the Houthis, an Iranian-backed terrorist group based in Yemen, as an official terrorist group after it removed the group from the official list shortly after Biden took office.

The Associated Press reported that the announcement is expected to come as soon as Wednesday and comes after the terrorist group has launched dozens of attacks on merchant vessels over the last couple of months.

Two members of the Navy SEALs who were reported missing last week off the coast of Somalia were part of a nighttime commando operation that seized a small boat carrying lethal aid from Iran to the Houthi militia in Yemen, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.

Navy commandos, backed by helicopters and drones hovering overhead, boarded the small boat, called a dhow, on Thursday and seized Iranian-made ballistic-missile and cruise-missile components bound for Yemen, the Pentagon’s Central Command said in a statement.

The U.S. military was searching for two Navy SEALs lost at sea during an operation that seized Iranian-made missile parts bound for Houthi rebels in Yemen, as the U.S. launched another series of strikes against the group.

The waters off the Yemen coastline have become a zone of increasing geopolitical turbulence since the repercussions of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel spread into the wider region, drawing in Washington and Iran-backed groups such as the Houthis.

A missile struck a U.S.-owned ship just off the coast of Yemen in the Gulf of Aden on Monday, according to officials.

The strike comes less than a day after Yemen's Houthi rebels fired an anti-ship cruise missile toward an American destroyer in the Red Sea. Monday's attack further escalates tensions in the Red Sea after American-led strikes on the rebels.

The U.S. military's Central Command (CENTCOM) acknowledged Monday's strike, blaming the Houthis for the assault.

United States and U.K. military forces through this weekend have bombed over a dozen targets allegedly utilized by Houthi rebels, sparking vows of retaliation from the Yemen-based group and perhaps making the prospect of a wider war more likely.

Conspicuously absent from the latest maneuvers were forces from France and Italy, two founding members of NATO that first deployed a significant naval presence in the Red Sea after Houthis began attacking merchant vessels there late last year.

President Joe Biden announced U.S. airstrikes on the Houthi movement, one of two competing factions claiming to be Yemen's government, on Thursday. The attacks came after Houthi drone and missile attacks on trade routes in the Red Sea, which Houthi leadership said was meant to pressure Israel to lift its siege on Gaza. Several members of Congress from both parties said that Biden had no constitutional authority to attack. Biden justified the strikes in terms of self-defense.

The United States carried out an additional strike against Yemen's Houthi forces on Friday, two officials told Reuters, after President Joe Biden's administration vowed to protect shipping in the Red Sea.

The latest strike, which one of the U.S. officials said targeted a radar site, came a day after dozens of U.S. and British strikes on the Iran-backed group's facilities.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, did not provide more details. Radar infrastructure has been a key target in the U.S. military effort to halt Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
