Inflation-linked bonds are the biggest losers in this month’s violent Treasury market selloff, and that’s only partly due to inflation expectations.

Yields on Treasury inflation-protected securities, or TIPS, have risen even more than those on regular Treasury bonds. The 30-year TIPS yield, for example, has gone up 41 basis points to its highest level since 2008, while the regular 30-year yield is up about 32 basis points at the highest level since January.

The cognitive dissonance for Democratic UMich survey respondents is about to go to '11' as various 'hard' data signals show inflation falling far more rapidly than expected (and not the hyperinflationary hell they were told to expect by the legacy media). You know you've pushed the Overton Window too far when even the chair of The Fed shrugs off your extreme data points as an outlier with partisan bias. The percentage of UMich respondents making unsolicited negative comments about news they've heard on government economic policy has surged to a...

Jerome Powell says that he needs hard data on the tariffs, and the effect they have on inflation, before he lowers interest rates. Here is some information that should help if he really cares: China is massively manipulating its currency to keep its prices down and factories humming to offset the tariffs. Just like in Trump’s first term, China is eating a lot of the tariffs, meaning they would have little effect on inflation in the U.S. Ford says it is discounting the price of its cars until June. If...

Scott Olson/Getty Images U.S. inflation continued cooling in March, slowing to its lowest level in six months, which was driven by falling energy prices. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual inflation rate declined to 2.4 percent from 2.8 percent in February, the lowest reading since September. Economists had penciled in a reading of 2.6 percent. On a...

MEXICO CITY--Inflation in Mexico held steady in March with lower energy costs offsetting upward pressure on core goods prices. The consumer price index rose 0.31% last month, nudging the 12-month inflation rate edged up to 3.8% from 3.77% in February, statistics institute Inegi said Wednesday. Lower gasoline and fresh fruit and vegetable prices in March were partially offset by higher meat prices and a rise in air fares. Core CPI, which excludes energy and fresh food items, rose 0.43% in March and was up 3.64% from a year earlier, compared...

When sky-high inflation pummeled Americans in 2022, the labor market was booming and wages were rising, softening the blow.

Now we're in a more vulnerable place.

Why it matters: With economists expecting tariffs to drive inflation, at least in the short-term, the concern is wages won't keep up, leading to lower incomes and real pain for many.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the economic impact of new tariffs is likely to be significantly larger than expected, and the central bank must make sure that doesn’t lead to a growing inflation problem.

ā€œWhile uncertainty remains elevated, it is now becoming clear that the tariff increases will be significantly larger than expected,ā€ Powell said in prepared remarks Friday at the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing annual conference. ā€œThe same is likely to be true of the economic effects, which will include higher inflation and slower growth.ā€

When it comes to the crucial task of gauging the impact of tariffs on inflation, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has a game plan: Separate the signal from the noise.

The sheer scale and scope of President Donald Trump’s sweeping global levies has made the already difficult task more challenging — and more consequential.

Subway is getting into nachos – but not just any kind. The sandwich chain says it’s now offering a footlong trough of $5 Doritos nachos, in hopes of boosting sales and wooing inflation-weary consumers. The limited-time offering features Nacho Cheese chips topped with shredded Monterey cheddar cheese, jalapeƱos, and red onions. Customers can add rotisserie-style chicken or steak at no extra charge, with smashed avocado available for an additional cost. The company added that its rewards members can get a free order of the XXL dish on April 10, if...
