In Azerbaijan, a country run by an authoritarian regime, it has taken gumption and daring for the independent journalists of Abzas Media to report. The headlines on their website list revelatory exposés about the foreign minister’s family wealth; a village relocated because of the president’s son-in-law; and companies with millions in unpaid taxes winning billions in new contracts.

A radio reporter for a local NPR affiliate was arrested while covering a pro-Palestine rally in Tucson, Arizona on Thursday morning. Alisa Reznick’s station, KJZZ, reported that she was one of 26 people arrested for criminal trespass at the site. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that those arrested had been cited and released in south Tucson. Video footage of the arrest posted to social media shows Reznick wearing a media pass and repeatedly identifying herself as a journalist as she is handcuffed. “I’m a reporter,” she says.

MSNBC announced on Thursday that it is canceling the show of outspoken journalist Mehdi Hasan as part of a weekend program overhaul, sparking backlash among supporters of the tough interviewer known lately for challenging the mainstream media’s coverage of Gaza.

Network President Rashida Jones announced to staff in a memo Thursday morning that Hasan, whose program “The Mehdi Hasan Show” typically aired Sundays at 8 p.m. and Tuesdays on streaming service Peacock, will now become an on-camera analyst and fill-in host. The move was first reported by Semafor.

Legendary reporter Pablo Guzman, whose voice was carried over Big Apple airwaves for decades, has died, CBS New York announced Monday. He was 73. 

Guzman died Sunday morning after decades of covering crime, politics, and the historic evolution of the city over the past 30-plus years. He most recently worked as a senior correspondent for CBS.

He worked at WNEW-TV Channel 5 starting in 1984 before he moved to WNBC in 1992. He then made the move to CBS 2 a few years later where he stayed for about 16 years.

Washington Post media reporter Paul Farhi is the most recent example of a journalist who sounds like his own colleagues are the “professionals” and the writers without the classic Old Media branding are the “non-pros,” people who don’t have standards.

Farhi began by tweeting: “Someone invented the phrase ‘citizen journalism’ a few years ago to describe amateurs doing the work of pros. Yes, it occasionally works, but probably no more often than “’citizen cop,’ ‘citizen attorney’ or ‘citizen soldier.’”
