Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom said transgender athletes playing in women’s sports is “an issue of fairness” in a break from most Democrats’ position on the topic.

“Well, I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness. It’s deeply unfair,” Newsom said in a podcast episode with conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, a defender of rights for the LGBTQ community, said his party was wrong in its support of transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.

“I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair,” Newsom said in an episode of his new podcast “This is Gavin Newsom.” He was speaking with conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who asked Newsom if he would say “no” to men participating in women’s sports.

Liberal California Gov. Gavin Newsom split with Democrats and acknowledged that “it’s deeply unfair” to allow transgender athletes to compete against biological women while chatting with a MAGA darling on his podcast debut episode

Newsom, 57, who is speculated to be eyeing a 2028 president run, stopped short of calling for an outright ban on transgender competition in girls’ sports, however, and lamented how conservatives “weaponize” that issue.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) broke on Thursday with his party’s general stance on transgender girls and women in sports, agreeing with right-wing pundit Charlie Kirk that their participation is “deeply unfair.”

Newsom hosted Kirk, founder of the conservative activist group Turning Point USA, on the first episode of his new podcast, “This Is Gavin Newsom.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said it’s “deeply unfair” for transgender girls and women to compete in female sports, breaking with fellow Democrats who have generally supported allowing trans student athletes to play on school sports teams that align with their gender identities.

Newsom made his remarks Thursday in the debut episode of his podcast, “This Is Gavin Newsom,” in which he conducted a 71-minute interview with conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, who opposes same-sex marriage and has said there is an “LGBTQ agenda.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) came out against transgender athletes participating in women’s sports, a major departure from many in his party.

In the debut episode of his new podcast, This is Gavin Newsom, the California governor hosted conservative activist Charlie Kirk for a nearly 70-minute conversation. At one point, Kirk challenged Newsom to speak out against AB Hernandez, a biological male high school athlete who competed in the women’s triple jump and won by over 8 feet.

Over the last five years, legislators across the country have escalated their attacks on trans youth and adults.

Iowa, however, now holds the dubious distinction of becoming the first statehouse to repeal civil rights protections for trans people. The bill legislators passed on Thursday explicitly removes civil rights protections that had been enshrined in state law. Once the pro-discrimination bill is signed by Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, trans people in Iowa will no longer be considered a protected category under state law.

Schools in Philadelphia will continue allowing transgender athletes to play in girls sports even after the state of Pennsylvania announced it would comply with President Donald Trump's "No Men in Women's Sports" executive order.

The School District of Philadelphia announced in a statement provided to Fox News Digital Tuesday it will continue following its previous policy that enables transgender inclusion.
