An American Airlines passenger jet with 64 people on board has crashed midair into a military helicopter while attempting to land at Reagan National Airport in Washington.

Emergency services in the city are searching the nearby Potomac River after the jet plummeted into the water just before 9pm on Wednesday night.

Officials have not said how many people died in the accident but have suggested that there may be no survivors. It is the first major commercial air crash in the US in 16 years.

Russian strongman Vladimir Putin apologized to Azerbaijan on Saturday for the crash of a civilian flight carrying passengers from Baku to Grozny in Russia-controlled Chechnya.

Putin had a phone call with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev and “apologised for the tragic incident that occurred in Russian airspace and once again expressed his deep and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured,” the Kremlin said.

Azerbaijan’s president on Sunday demanded that Russia admit responsibility for the incident that led to the Christmas Day crash of a passenger plane that killed 38 people and pay compensation to the government and affected families.

The Jeju Air plane from Bangkok attempted a belly landing at Muan International Airport after its landing gear reportedly failed to deploy.

The passenger plane burst into flames on Sunday at nine in the morning after it skidded off the runway and slammed into a concrete fence when its front landing gear apparently failed to deploy.

All but two of the 181 people on board died in what was one of the country’s worst aviation disasters, the South Korean fire agency said. Four of the dead were crew members, the rest passengers.

Two Mississippi National Guardsmen died after the helicopter they were in crashed Friday afternoon, the governor of Mississippi said.

The aircraft, an AH-64 Apache helicopter, crashed near Booneville, Mississippi, around 2 p.m. local time, the Mississippi National Guard State Aviation Office said in a news release.

Safety crews were working with local authorities at the scene of the crash. 

"Mississippi will always be grateful for their service and we will never forget them," Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said on social media.
