Eli Lilly’s Alzheimer’s drug gets thumbs down from European regulators

European Medicines Agency advisers said Friday that Eli Lilly’s Alzheimer’s disease treatment should not be approved, once again diverging from their U.S. counterparts. The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use recommended against approving Eli Lilly’s Kisunla because it considered the risks of a type of brain swelling known as amyloid-related imaging abnormalities, or ARIA, to outweigh the treatment’s benefits. Kisunla, also known as donanemab, was approved for use in the U.S. last year.

Senate confirms Trump’s nominee to run NIH

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed health researcher Jay Bhattacharya as the next leader of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Bhattacharya was confirmed on a party- line vote, 53 to 47.

Bhattacharya became a celebrity among many Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic for criticizing masking orders, school closures and other measures meant to mitigate the spread of the virus.

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted along party lines to confirm Stanford professor Jay Bhattacharya as director of the National Institutes of Health, the biggest funder of biomedical research in the world. The vote was 53-47, with all Republicans backing Bhattacharya. It’s the conclusion to a relatively smooth confirmation process for Bhattacharya, who echoed health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Kr.’s promises to make America healthy again during his confirmation hearing in March.
