The U.S. Justice Department has reached a $138.7 million civil settlement with hundreds of victims of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who is serving time in prison for sexually abusing athletes under his care, the agency said on Tuesday.

The settlement resolves claims the FBI botched the initial investigation into Nassar, the Justice Department said.

The Justice Department agreed on Tuesday to pay $138.7 million to settle 139 claims of those who accused the FBI of mishandling sexual assault allegations against disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nasar in 2015 and 2016.

Nassar worked at Michigan State University and was the team doctor at USA Gymnastics in Indianapolis. Several current and former athletes, including Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Maggie Nichols, all testified at a 2021 Senate hearing that the FBI failed to act on their complaints against him.

The U.S. Justice Department announced a $138.7 million settlement Tuesday with more than 100 people who accused the FBI of grossly mishandling allegations of sexual assault against Larry Nassar in 2015 and 2016, a critical time gap that allowed the sports doctor to continue to prey on victims before his arrest.

When combined with other settlements, $1 billion now has been set aside by various organizations to compensate hundreds of women who said Nassar assaulted them under the guise of treatment for sports injuries.

When conservative icon Matt Schlapp announced Tuesday that the sexual battery and defamation lawsuit against him had been dropped, he and his allies were quick to note that the ordeal ended without him or the American Conservative Union—the right-wing organization he runs—paying his accuser a single dollar.

But what Schlapp didn’t disclose was that the Republican operative who sued him was, in fact, paid to drop the lawsuit, according to two people with knowledge of the payout. It was just that the money came from ACU’s insurance company, these two people told The Daily Beast.

A former managing director of Qatari news outlet Al Jazeera took to Twitter Sunday night to disavow the network’s allegation that soldiers from the Israeli Defense Forces had raped women during their ongoing operation in Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital.

“Hamas investigations revealed that the story of the rape of women in Shifa Hospital was fabricated,” wrote Yasser Abu Hilalah on X. “Of course, the enemy did not hesitate to commit the crime of genocide,” he added.

The leader of a local Young Republicans chapter in Alabama was arrested last week in connection with the death of another man, with charges against him including a count of "sexual torture."

On Thursday, deputies with the Madison County Sheriff's Office discovered a dead body later identified as 54-year-old Derek Franklin Walls of Harvest, Alabama, after being called to a home on the 1700 block of Capshaw Road. Later that same day, it was announced that deputies had arrested 36-year-old Kyle Hayden Lewter in connection with Walls' death.

(The Center Square) – Virginia’s Liberty University has been fined $14 million in response to an investigation that says the school failed to report campus crime statistics and its handling of victims of sexual assault.

The U.S. Department of Education delivered its largest fine for violating the Clery Act, requiring higher education institutions to “produce and distribute Annual Security Reports containing their campus crime statistics.”

A team of United Nations experts tasked with gathering information on sexual violence linked to Hamas’s Oct. 7 attacks on Israel found “reasonable grounds to believe” that some victims were sexually assaulted, including rape and gang rape, according to a U.N. report released Monday.

“In most of these incidents, victims first subjected to rape were then killed,” a press release announcing the report’s findings said. “The mission team also found a pattern of victims, mostly women, found fully or partially naked, bound, and shot across multiple locations.”

A team of United Nations experts reported on Monday that there were "reasonable grounds to believe" sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, occurred at several locations during the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas militants.

The team - led by U.N. special envoy for sexual violence in conflict Pramila Patten - visited Israel between Jan. 29 and Feb. 14 on a mission intended to gather, analyze and verify information on sexual violence linked to the Oct. 7 attacks.
