A tornado destroyed homes and toppled trees and power lines when it roared through a small Oklahoma town, one of several twisters that erupted in the central United States amid a series of powerful storms that stretched into Tuesday. At least one death was reported. The tornado ripped through the 1,000-person town of Barnsdall, about a 40-minute drive north of Tulsa, on Monday night. At least 30 to 40 homes in the Barnsdall area were damaged, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported, and the state Department of Health reported a nursing...

This year has been more stressful than most. Camp applications are rolling in every day, but commitments from counselors, specifically male counselors, are not keeping pace. It’s a persistent problem for summer programs of all types — some of which have been forced to trim their offerings because of staff shortages — but the repercussions are heavier for Camp Courage. In 1998, Byrne, then a pediatric oncology nurse, formed Annie’s Hope — named after a little girl who had been her patient — to provide grief counseling for children and...

In the spring of 1985, more than 100 Columbia University students blockaded Hamilton Hall for three weeks, protesting the university’s financial investments in South Africa. At the time, a school administrator stated that bringing police on campus to quash the student protest would be “anathema” to the university. Anti-apartheid protests were commonplace then: More than 80 students at Princeton University blocked off that institution’s main administrative building, Nassau Hall, shortly after the Columbia action.

At least 16 tornadoes were reported in six states overnight into Tuesday morning. The twisters were reported in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and South Dakota. The most destructive storm appeared to have been in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, north of Tulsa, where major damage was reported. In addition to tornadoes, 4-inch hail, about the size of a softball, was reported in Kansas. A tornado watch had been issued Tuesday morning for parts of Missouri -- including St. Louis -- and Illinois. That watch was to be in effect until 8 a.m....

A tornado watch has been issued for St. Louis and much of the surrounding area until 8 a.m. Tuesday. A line of thunderstorms is expected to move across the metro area from 4 a.m. until 8 a.m. Heavy rain and lightning will be common. Some storms may produce wind gusts up to 70 mph and up to quarter size hail. A couple of brief EF0 or EF1 tornadoes could occur as well. Unnecessary travel should be postponed early this morning until the line of thunderstorms clears your location. Make sure...

On May 7, 1945, German forces surrendered to the Allies on the battlefield in France, setting of a celebration in St. Louis. The following day, President Harry S Truman made the official announcement on the radio, saying "the flags of freedom fly all over Europe." Here is a look at how the Post-Dispatch covered the news in a special Extra edition.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaccob Slavin scored the winning goal 7:53 into the third period and Jake Guentzel added a pair of empty-netters, lifting the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Friday night. Slavin scored when both teams were playing with four men as Carolina wons its fourth game in a row and sixth in its last seven. Seth Jarvis and Jordan Martinook also scored for Carolina and Frederik Andersen made 29 saves to improve to 13-2-0. Jordan Kyrou and Zack Bolduc scored for...

The once bustling downtown of St. Louis, Missouri, is now stuck in a "doom loop," marred by a score of empty office buildings, thieves and retail closures, according to a new report. The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday published a story on the "real estate nightmare" and detailed stories of boarded-up properties and occasional raids by police and firefighters searching for squatters and missing people. "It's a very dangerous place," St. Louis Fire Department Chief Dennis Jenkerson told the paper. During one of the 2023 raids, a search dog fell...

PALM BEACH GARDENS — An indoor ice rink is set for construction at Plant Drive Park, replacing its skate park and basketball and pickleball courts and most notably, a softball field that honors a Palm Beach Gardens High School standout who was murdered in 2007. The City Council unanimously gave the greenlight on Thursday, April 4, for the Palm Beach North Athletic Foundation to build a 100,000-square-foot building with two full-sized ice rinks, a restaurant, a sports bar and medical space at the park nestled between Palm Beach Gardens High...
