In 1892, the Cardinals joined the National League as the St. Louis Browns. They had existed for the previous 10 in one form or another as part of the American Association. When this current franchise talks about its anniversaries and its overall records, it always starts at 1892 and moves forward. On April 12, 1892, more than 8,000 fans gathered at Sportsman’s Park to see the St. Louis Browns face Cap Anson’s Chicago Cubs. Cliff Carroll homered for the pre-Cardinals in a 14-10 loss. Kid Gleason, the opening day starter,...

ā€œSTAY HOME ST LOUISā€ the downtown traffic signs read during the pandemic. The locals obeyed then. And they are still staying out of downtown St. Louis today. ā€œThe office district is empty,ā€ the Wall Street Journal recently reported, ā€œwith boarded up towers, copper thieves and failing retail — even the Panera outlet shut down. The city is desperately trying to reverse the ā€˜doom loop.ā€ Yet another downtown has fallen in the post-COVID, post George Floyd era. While America’s largest metropolises are persisting in reduced states, the middle tier of cities...

St. Louis native Ben McLemore, a former No. 7 overall NBA Draft pick, has been arrested in Oregon and charged with four felony sex offenses. McLemore faces charges in Clackamas County, Oregon, of first-degree rape, first-degree unlawful sexual penetration and two counts of second-degree sexual abuse, all felonies. He was arraigned there Wednesday. According to a statement from the Lake Oswego, Oregon, Police Department, the charges stem from a reported sexual assault in October 2021. The victim reported that she was assaulted in a home in the suburban Portland municipality...

Arizona fans have had professional sports teams relocate to the state, but the state hasn't ever been on the other end, where a team relocated from Arizona. That could soon change, with the speculation and rumors about the Arizona Coyotes potentially relocating to Salt Lake City. Ask any fan of teams that have gone through the relocation process: It isn't fun, nor pretty to lose your professional sports team. In 1988, Arizona was the beneficiary of a team relocating, as the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals relocated to Arizona to become...

CLAYTON — Prosecutors on Thursday charged a 20-year-old man with fatally shooting a woman in January while trying to steal her gun, St. Louis County police said. Devin Macon, of St. Louis, was charged with second-degree murder and stealing a gun after prosecutors say he shot 25-year-old Keila Buckner during a struggle over a gun in Jennings. Charging documents say Macon and Buckner agreed to go to the New York Market on Jennings Station Road in Jennings to exchange guns and cash. Surveillance video showed the two talking and holding...

St. LOUIS — Two burglars here threw a brick into the front window of a Soulard bar early Wednesday, climbed in through the broken glass and stole cash from several register drawers in the manager's basement office. But then they came back to the building on Sidney Street, and one jumped through the broken window and opened the front door for the accomplice. They returned to the manager's office and stole the register drawers they had emptied the first time around. Vieluf said one of them could be seen on...

ST. LOUIS — Arguments before a federal appeals court that is considering whether to reinstate Arkansas’ first-in-the-nation ban on gender-affirming care for minors focused Thursday on whether it and similar restrictions adopted by two dozen states discriminate on the basis of sex. Ten judges with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis heard arguments over a judge’s ruling last year that struck down the ban as unconstitutional. The 2021 law would prohibit doctors from providing gender-affirming hormone treatment, puberty blockers or surgery to anyone under 18. An...

Illinois State Police have located the body of a missing St. Louis woman, believed murdered by her former boyfriend. St. Louis County Police announced the discovery and identification of Marquisha Williams, 29, on Thursday. The mother of four was reported missing last week. The release did not specify where Williams’ body was located. Police and volunteer groups searched areas along Interstate 55 in Madison County in recent days, including an area east of Edwardsville near the intersection of Illinois 143 and in Staunton. ā€œNumerous searches for Ms. Williams have been...
