The White House is "looking into" the legality of sending U.S. citizens to prisons in El Salvador, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a briefing Tuesday.

The big picture: President Trump has recently threatened to send Americans to a notorious El Salvador prison where several deported Venezuelans, who are alleged to be members of the MS-13 gang, and one erroneously deported Maryland man are being held.

Donald Trump’s attorney Boris Epshteyn made a bold assertion during a meeting in late 2023: Trump wouldn’t necessarily be limited to two terms in office.

Speaking to an associate in October 2023 in downtown Washington, Epshteyn pushed back on the notion that Trump would be a lame duck if he won the election in 2024. Epshteyn said he had studied the law—and he believed Trump could find a way to run again in 2028, according to the person Epshteyn met with.

In the ever-turbulent arena of American politics, the specter of double standards looms large. Recent uproar over President Donald Trump's musings about a potential third term starkly contrasts with the muted reactions to former President Barack Obama's similar contemplations. This glaring inconsistency not only exposes media bias but also underscores a troubling trend of selective outrage that undermines the very fabric of our democratic discourse.

President Trump has once again floated the idea of testing the Constitution's presidential term limits by seeking a third term, as his administration continues to challenge constitutional provisions and push an expansive view of executive power.

After telling NBC News that he's "not joking" about the possibility and that there are "methods" that would allow him to serve a third time, Trump declined to confirm to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that he's planning to leave the White House after his second term ends on Jan. 20, 2029...

President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, which is prohibited by the Constitution under the 22nd Amendment, saying in an exclusive interview with NBC News that there were methods for doing so and clarifying that he was ā€œnot joking.ā€

ā€œA lot of people want me to do it,ā€ Trump said in a Sunday-morning phone call with NBC News, referring to his allies. ā€œBut, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.ā€

President Donald Trump has said that he has not ruled out the possibility of seeking a third term, even though that is prohibited under the U.S. Constitution.

Newsweek sought email comment from the office of Attorney General Pam Bondi on Monday.

A legal expert told Newsweek there are a number of routes that Trump could take to legally take a third term. He could become the first U.S. president to serve a third term since the 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951. That set a two-term limit on all U.S. presidents.

President Donald Trump revealed he’s ā€œnot jokingā€ about running for a third term during a Sunday phone call with NBC News’s Kristen Welker.

ā€œA lot of people want me to do it,ā€ Trump reportedly told Welker, vaguely referring to allies. ā€œBut, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go. You know, it’s very early in the administration.ā€

ā€œI’m focused on the current,ā€ the president continued.

ā€œI’m not joking,ā€ Trump clarified. ā€œBut I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.ā€

Critics are calling out President Donald Trump for saying that he’s ā€œnot jokingā€ about possibly seeking a third term in office, which would violate the Constitution.

ā€œThere are methods which you could do it,ā€ Trump told NBC News on Sunday.

The network asked if one option would be for Vice President JD Vance to run and then hand off the presidency to Trump.

ā€œThat’s one,ā€ Trump said.

It’s difficult to convey the full magnitude of the legal chaos emanating from the Trump administration. It goes well beyond the violation of individual laws — much of the past month has featured what feels like an assault on the very idea of law as a binding constraint.
