BURLINGTON — FaReid Munarsyah missed breaking fast with his friends and family back home in eastern Indonesia. So he created his own gathering in Vermont. For about two decades, the Burlington resident and co-organizer of The People’s Kitchen has been serving up community feasts on Eid from his South End home. The Islamic holiday marks the end of Ramadan when Muslims around the world break their month of dawn-to-dusk fasting with a traditional feast. What that feast entails depends on where you are from. For Munarsyah, it includes shrimp chips,...

The man accused of starting a fire outside U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' Vermont office a week ago has had past brushes with the law involving guns and a history of traveling from place to place, prosecutors say in court filings arguing that he should remain detained. Security video shows Shant Michael Soghomonian throwing liquid at the bottom of a door opening into Sanders’ third-floor office in Burlington and setting it on fire with a lighter last Friday, according to an affidavit filed by a special agent with the Bureau of...

The Arizona Legislature devolved into shouts of ā€œShame! Shame!ā€ on Wednesday as Republican lawmakers quickly shut down discussion on a proposed repeal of the state’s newly revived 1864 law that criminalizes abortion throughout pregnancy unless a woman’s life is at risk. The state Supreme Court cleared the way on Tuesday for enforcement of the pre-statehood law. Arizona abortion providers vowed Wednesday to continue service until they’re forced to stop, possibly within weeks.

For one Vermont district, this week’s solar eclipse brought with it a unique opportunity for collaboration among educators across the K-12 spectrum. Amy Clapp, a 4th grade teacher in the Addison Central school district, created a working group of educators last October. Together they created a set of lessons that could be modified to meet the needs and abilities of each grade level as they learned about this week’s solar eclipse. These lessons included a read-aloud facilitated by the school librarian, a math exercise in which students calculated how old...

Police are searching for a suspect in what appears to have been an attempted arson at the Burlington, Vermont office of Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). At around 10:45 a.m. on Friday, a man entered Sanders’ office before spraying an ā€œapparent accelerantā€ on an entrance door, Burlington police said in a statement. After the man lit the flammable substance, ā€œa significant fire engulfed the door and part of the vestibule, impeding the egress of staff members who were working in the office and endangering their lives,ā€ police said. Vermont State Police...

A fire broke out outside Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Burlington, Vt., office on Friday, and police suspect an arsonist may be to blame. No injuries were reported, but members of the independent senator’s staff were inside the building when the ā€œsignificant fireā€ was apparently ignited. ā€œA significant fire engulfed the door and part of the vestibule, impeding the egress of staff members who were working in the office and endangering their lives,ā€ the Burlington Police Department said in a statement. ā€œThe sprinkler system then engaged and largely extinguished the fire.ā€ Authorities...

BURLINGTON — A former Vermont State Police trooper received a probationary sentence and was ordered to take part in a restorative justice program Friday after pleading guilty to five criminal charges related to his stealing from an evidence room while still on the force. Giancarlo DiGenova, 45, entered guilty pleas in Chittenden County Superior criminal court in Burlington to a felony grand larceny charge and misdemeanor counts of petty larceny, providing false information to police, neglect of duty and making a false statement. More than a dozen other charges stemming...

COLD SPRING, NY — A Putnam County man, who has been missing, was killed Tuesday while skiing at Stowe Mountain Resort in Stowe, Vermont. The Stowe Police Department said it received a report about the missing man at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and his body was found just before midnight. Officials said the skier was identified as Brooks Ralph, 27, of Cold Spring , MyNBC5 reported. He was found in an out-of-bounds wooded area, the New York Post reported. Ralph’s body was taken to the state’s medical examiner’s office to determine...

A judge in the environmental division of Vermont Superior Court gave the go-ahead Tuesday for demolition of the former Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Burlington, considered by some to be a masterpiece of modernist architecture. The cathedral was designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes and the property was landscaped by Dan Kiley, whom the state architectural historian called "two of the foremost designers of the 20th century." It closed in December 2018 after dwindling to fewer than 100 parishioners. Judge Thomas Durkin ruled against a group of 10 Burlington...
