SACRAMENTO — California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday withdrew a $54 million contract with Walgreens after the pharmacy giant indicated it would not sell an abortion pill by mail in some conservative-led states. Newsom on Wednesday ordered state officials to not renew a contract with Walgreens to purchase specialty pharmacy prescription drugs for California's prison health care system, including antivirual and antifungal drugs and medication used for congestive heart failure. Walgreens has gotten about $54 million from the contract, which expires April 30.

California won’t renew a $54 million contract with Walgreens as planned after the retailer announced it would stop selling abortion drug mifepristone in some states, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday. The announcement comes two days after Newsom vowed to stop doing business with Walgreens after the company caved to requests from conservative attorneys general to stop selling mifepristone. “California will not stand by as corporations cave to extremists and cut off critical access to reproductive care and freedom,” Newsom said in a statement. “California is on track to be the...

California will cease all its business with Walgreens, the retail drugstore chain, Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Monday, days after the company announced it would not dispense abortion medication in 21 Republican-dominated states. “California won’t be doing business with @walgreens – or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk,” the Democratic governor tweeted. “We’re done.” Newsom’s pushback came at an already fraught time for the future of medication abortion, which is used in more than half of all procedures nationwide, as a Texas judge...

California would not do business with Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (WBA.O), state Governor Gavin Newsom said in a tweet on Monday, days after the pharmacy chain said it will not dispense abortion pills in some Republican states.

The state refuses to do business with Walgreens or "any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women's lives at risk," Democrat governor Newsom said.

Walgreens did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) said California will no longer do "business" with Walgreens, days after the pharmaceutical chain announced it does not intend to dispense a major abortion medication in some states where the pills remain legal.

The Democratic governor, who has championed California as a sanctuary state for abortion, indicated California would be cutting ties with Walgreens and "any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women's lives at risk" in a tweet on Monday.

Walgreens won't distribute abortion pills in states where Republican officials have threatened legal action — including some places where abortion is still legal and available. The pharmacy chain said in a statement to NPR on Friday that it's still taking steps to sell the drug in "jurisdictions where it is legal and operationally feasible."

The nation’s second-largest pharmacy chain confirmed Thursday that it will not dispense abortion pills in several states where they remain legal — acting out of an abundance of caution amid a shifting policy landscape, threats from state officials and pressure from anti-abortion activists.

Nearly two dozen Republican state attorneys general wrote to Walgreens in February, threatening legal action if the company began distributing the drugs, which have become the nation’s most popular method for ending a pregnancy.

It's the first day of March and — even though it may not feel like it — daylight savings time and the arrival of spring is just around the corner. Why not to take a moment this evening to check out some of our recent coverage of Chicago's north suburbs? Here are some of the stories that have been getting attention from Patch.com readers so far this week: The pharmacy giant has been headquartered on Wilmot Road since 1975. Records show Skokie's three-member commission has never properly held public meetings,...

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - In response to a Feb. 6 letter from Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach warning Walgreens not to send abortion pills into Kansas in violation of state and federal laws, Walgreens today announced it will not dispense Mifepristone in the Sunflower State. “This is a significant victory for the pro-life cause and for women’s health,” Kobach said. “The dispensing of these pills without a supervising physician present would expose women to complications and potentially to coercion as well. I’m grateful Walgreens has responded quickly and reasonably and...
