It took 18 hours, a Lyft, two planes, three cross-country train rides, and a drive in a Volvo sports utility vehicle to get from midtown Manhattan to an apartment on Scalettastrasse, a snow-lined street in the heart of Davos.

The small Swiss Alpine town is again playing host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), where the world’s top brass in finance and politics convene each year to try to solve the biggest problems that plague our planet.

The World Economic Forum’s annual meeting began in Davos with corporate executives and economists warning a global recession is likely this year.

Of 4,410 business leaders surveyed by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in October and November last year, 73% predicted global growth to decline over the coming 12 months. The left applauds the focus on climate change and economic inequality, but worries that attendees will not match their words with actions.

The right accuses Davos attendees of hypocrisy and criticizes Thunberg’s policy suggestions.

US President Donald Trump has decried climate "prophets of doom" in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where sustainability is the main theme.

He called for a rejection of "predictions of the apocalypse" and said America would defend its economy.

Mr Trump did not directly name the teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was in the audience.

Later, she excoriated political leaders, saying the world "in case you hadn't noticed, is currently on fire".
