House Oversight Chairman James Comer on Monday launched an investigation into sanctuary cities, requesting documents and communications related to their policies and their impact on public safety.

Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle assured lawmakers that she takes full responsibility for the failed assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump at the first congressional hearing on the subject — but mostly refused to provide any details on what exactly went wrong, passing the buck instead to the FBI to provide specific information.

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle admitted to Congress on Monday that she and her agency failed when a would-be assassin wounded Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, but rebuffed bipartisan calls to resign.

"We failed," Cheatle said in testimony before the House of Representatives Oversight Committee. "The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13th is the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades."

Kimberly Cheatle, director of the U.S. Secret Service, acknowledged Monday that the near-assassination of former President Donald Trump represented a fundamental failure on her agency’s part, but refused to explain exactly what went wrong.

Speaking before lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Cheatle described the July 13 shooting of Trump and attendees at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, as “the most significant operational failure” at the Secret Service in decades.

The House Oversight Committee on Wednesday issued a subpoena for the Secret Service director to testify next week on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. 

The committee had written to agency Director Kimberly Cheatle on Tuesday to request a voluntary hearing July 22, which the Secret Service originally said she would attend. However, after Department of Homeland Security officials intervened in scheduling, the director's attendance was called into question, House Oversight Chairman James Comer said in a letter released alongside the subpoena. 

The Republican-led House Oversight Committee announced this week that they are referring both Hunter Biden and James Biden for criminal prosecution.

"Our Committee, along with @JudiciaryGOP and @WaysandMeansGOP, today sent criminal referrals to the DOJ recommending Hunter and James Biden be charged with making false statements to Congress about key aspects of the impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden," the committee said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The GOP Oversight Committee hearing Thursday evening devolved into absolute chaos between a handful of Republican and Democratic representatives who argued over insults thrown across the aisle.

One of Hunter Biden's former business associates -- now in prison -- has told Congress that Biden sought roughly $5 million from fugitive Ukrainian oligarch Dmitri Firtash to help try to quash a U.S. indictment while his father was vice president and presiding over U.S.-Ukraine policy, according to an eyewitness to the testimony.

Hunter Biden unexpectedly appeared with his attorneys at the House Oversight Committee's meeting Wednesday morning to consider the resolution that, if passed, would set up a full House vote on whether to hold him in contempt of Congress for defying a congressional subpoena as part of the House impeachment inquiry against President Biden.
