U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited the Middle East this week to garner regional support for a U.S.-proposed Gaza ceasefire deal.

The Details: In his eighth visit to the region since the Gaza war began, Blinken met with key leaders, including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — as well as Israeli opposition leaders Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid. Blinken said Netanyahu “reaffirmed his commitment” to the U.S.-backed plan, saying the onus now rested on Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who he said was hiding “ten stories underground in Gaza.” At a conference in Jordan on Tuesday, Blinken announced an additional $404 million in humanitarian aid for Palestinians and called on Arab leaders to pressure Hamas to accept a hostage deal.

For Context: The conflict in Gaza took a decisive turn recently, with Israeli forces successfully rescuing four hostages held by Hamas in a raid that the Gaza health ministry said killed 274 Palestinians. These developments have intensified the urgency for a ceasefire and peace in the region.

How The Media Covered It: Coverage was common across the spectrum, echoing divides in attitudes about the Israeli government, Hamas, and the Biden administration. For instance, one headline from the generally pro-Israel Fox News (Right bias) highlighted a Hamas official’s characterization of Blinken as an obstacle to peace, only noting later in the article that the official said Blinken was too aligned with Israel. This summary was developed with the help of AllSides' AI technology.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met with top Israeli opposition leaders as the United States continues to push for a truce deal in Gaza.

Blinken held talks with Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid in Israel on Tuesday before travelling to Jordan to attend an international Gaza aid conference.

In his meeting with Gantz, Blinken blamed Hamas for failure to reach a truce agreement.

US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced an additional $404 million in new aid to Palestinians, while attending the “Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza” Conference in Jordan on Tuesday.

This is in addition to “the more than $1.8 billion in development, economic, and humanitarian aid that the United States has provided since 2021”, as “the largest single country provider of assistance for Palestinians,” Blinken noted.

BLINKEN: ‘IF YOU WANT A CEASEFIRE, PRESS HAMAS TO SAY YES’: Even though the ceasefire and hostage release plan announced by President Joe Biden on May 31 was presented as an Israeli proposal, Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Tel Aviv on Monday urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to support it.
