Some 61 people have been indicted in Georgia on racketeering charges after a state-run investigation into protests opposing the construction of a sprawling police training facility known as the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. The indictment was brought on Aug. 29 and in an accompanying statement by Republican Attorney General Chris Carr, he hailed it as a necessary effort by authorities to quell the use of “coordinated violence” and “intimidation” by opponents to the $90 million training facility’s construction. The project spans nearly 100 acres and is located in an...

Sixty-one advocates in Atlanta’s “Stop Cop City” movement have been charged with racketeering after a Georgia state investigation into their protests. The Aug. 29 indictment is another iteration of the state’s RICO law that has entangled high-profile individuals, such as former president Donald Trump. According to NBC News, individuals associated with the “Stop Cop City” movement are facing charges for allegedly permitting violence to seep into their protests against the expansive and controversial police training facility in Atlanta.

The Georgia racketeering laws that have been used in cases against a rapper and a former president have now been turned on protesters who have fiercely opposed a planned police and firefighter training center in Atlanta. On Tuesday, the state attorney general’s office announced RICO charges against 61 individuals for their efforts opposing “Cop City.” Social justice advocates say it’s a continued effort to target protesters who participated in the racial justice demonstrations that followed the murder of George Floyd in 2020, and warn that if the charges are successful,...

Fulton County Attorney General Christopher Carr filed a long indictment against 61 people in the Fulton County Superior Court last week, alleging that the defendants were part of a criminal conspiracy to obstruct the construction of a police and firefighting training facility in the Atlanta area. The facility, known as “Copy City” by its opponents, has been the subject of numerous protests in the Atlanta area, with one activist shot and killed by police. In response to the indictment, some posters on X are pointing out how much the indictment...

Republican Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has indicted dozens of people on racketeering charges over years of riots and protests in opposition to the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, which is under construction. “Cop City,” as the facility has been called by left-wing activists, has been targeted since it was announced by organized protesters. In an indictment that was announced on Tuesday, Carr called those who have been targeting the facility “militant anarchists,” the Associated Press reported. The indictment, which is dated Aug.

More than 60 people have been named in a state RICO indictment filed in connection with the yearslong campaign by protesters in Georgia to thwart construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center – dubbed “Cop City” by detractors. “All 61 defendants have been charged with Violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act,” Republican Attorney General Chris Carr’s office said in a statement Tuesday. “Several of the defendants are also facing separate charges of Domestic Terrorism, Attempted Arson in the First Degree, and Money Laundering.” Georgia’s RICO law...

Activists have spent two years protesting the construction of a police training center southeast of Atlanta. The city plans to build the facility, which protesters have dubbed "Cop City," on state-owned forested land, and activists have resorted to various tactics—including, in some cases, violence—in opposition. This week, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced charges for 61 protesters under the state's Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. The indictment claims the defendants are all part of a criminal enterprise called Defend the Atlanta Forest.

Dozens of suspects in violent protests against an Atlanta-area police training facility critics call “Cop City” have been indicted on racketeering charges.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr released the indictment Tuesday, accusing the 61 defendants of acting as “militant anarchists” in the “Stop Cop City” movement.

Mr. Carr alleged the suspects conspired to prevent the facility’s construction “by conducting, coordinating and organizing acts of violence, intimidation and property destruction.”

On Tuesday morning, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced that a state grand jury had indicted 61 people allegedly connected to the Defend the Atlanta Forest movement, slapping a serious and shocking slate of RICO charges onto a decentralized movement that has sought to derail the construction of a massive police training facility for nearly two years. Activists and civil rights groups worry the indictment could set a dangerous, anti-democratic precedent for cracking down on similar protest movements nationwide.

In Atlanta, 61 activists have been indicted on RICO charges for their involvement in protests against the construction of a massive $90 million police training complex known as Cop City. Georgia’s Republican Attorney General Christopher Carr accuses the activists of violating the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The indictment was handed up by the same Fulton County grand jury panel that indicted President Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants on RICO charges. Many of the protesters have already been charged with domestic terrorism.
