Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) was found guilty on all 16 felony charges by a federal jury after using his power to benefit foreign governments and American businessmen in exchange for “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in bribes.

Key Details: In 2023, Menendez stepped down from chairing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after his indictment. The charges alleged that he had accepted bribes from Egyptian officials, disclosed sensitive information to them, and used his leadership postion to influence policy for their benefit. Menendez pleaded not guilty to the charges. His sentence could include decades of prison time.

For Context: Moments after the jury's verdict was announced, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called on Menendez to resign, joining many top New Jersey Democrats, including Sen. Cory Booker and Gov. Phil Murphy, who made the call months earlier. After the conviction, Murphy went further, calling for his expulsion from the Senate should he refuse to resign.

How the Media Covered It: Left-leaning outlets featured more prominently the calls from various Democrats for Menendez to resign. Daily Signal (Right bias) highlighted the story of federal agents searching a Menendez property and discovering over $480,000 in cash, a luxury vehicle, and over $100,000 in gold bars.

NEW YORK (NewsNation) —New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez was found guilty of accepting bribes, including gold and a luxury car.

Menendez pleaded not guilty to 16 felony charges that he accepted bribes from three New Jersey businessmen, including hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash from 2018 to 2022.

The trial lasted nine weeks and took place in a Manhattan federal court. The start of jury deliberations had been pushed back a day due to a four-hour prosecution rebuttal.

The jury in the federal corruption trial of Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and two of his business associates, Fred Daibes and Wael Hana, found Menendez guilty on all charges after a grueling nine-week complex trial in Manhattan.

Menendez pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he accepted an array of bribes in exchange for helping foreign governments. Jurors deliberated for three days. The conviction on all 16 counts against him exposes Menendez to a sentence of more than 200 years in prison, though such a heavy sentence is unlikely.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) was found guilty on Tuesday of federal bribery charges accusing him of accepting "hundreds of thousands of dollars" in bribes in exchange for wielding his influence to benefit foreign governments and a trio of businessmen, per multiple outlets.

Why it matters: Menendez — who filed to run for re-election last month — now faces possible expulsion from the Senate as well as decades in prison.

The big picture: Menendez was found guilty on all 16 felony counts to which he had pleaded not guilty.
