The World Health Organization delivered a positive outlook on the state of the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday. W.H.O. Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that while there are still necessary steps to be taken by global powers to ensure the virus is kept at bay, weekly deaths from COVID-19 are at the lowest level since March 2020.
“A marathon runner does not stop when the finish line comes into view,” the Director stated. “She runs harder with all the energy she has left. So must we. We can see the finish line, we are in a winning position, but now is the worst time to stop running. Now is the time to run harder and make sure we cross the line and reap the rewards of all our hard work.”
In addition to voicing optimism towards the battle against the virus that has killed over six million people across the globe, the W.H.O. released six policy briefs of recommendations for countries to continue the current trend as well as prepare for potential future outbreaks and pandemics.
Coverage of the W.H.O. update was fairly even, with slightly more seen from the left. Reuters, Fox News, and Newsmax (Right Bias) all noted COVID-19’s origins in China, while CNN and MarketWatch (Center Bias) both did not. Bloomberg (Lean Left Bias) reported on the W.H.O’s statements being censored by Chinese media.
