A 26-year-old French national named Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab, who was known to authorities as a radical Islamist, was detained after killing one and injuring two in a knife attack near the Eiffel Tower on Saturday.
The Details: France’s interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, said the man killed was a German national, whose wife was saved by an intervening taxi driver. The suspect, who was convicted of plotting a 2016 attack that authorities foiled, reportedly said France was “complicit” in “what Israel is doing in Gaza.” The suspect had served time in prison and was undergoing psychiatric treatment.
For Context: France has endured several terror attacks in recent years. In 2015, 130 victims were killed in Paris attacks claimed by ISIS. More recently, in October a suspect who authorities deemed was involved with radical Islamism walked into the school he graduated from and fatally stabbed a teacher, while injuring three others.
How The Media Covered It: The Guardian (Lean Left bias) provided context on previous terror attacks in France, and the country’s large Jewish and Muslim populations. It also included context on the attacker’s race and religion. It said French media reported that the attacker was born to parents of Iranian origin who were not Muslim, and it is believed that he was radicalized online.
