A new report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows the U.S. produces more crude oil than any country ever has, and has been doing so for six years.

Key Details: U.S. oil production has been expanding since 2009 as newer drilling techniques, such as horizontal drilling, have been adopted by producers. The U.S. has gone from 5 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2008 to 12.9 million in 2023, a 158% increase.

For Context: These record-setting numbers are unlikely to be beaten anytime soon, with no country outside the U.S. exceeding a 13 million b/d production capacity. This was not always the case; production declined for decades up until 2009. Since 2009, the only reported issues with this growth stemmed from economic issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
