A California judge blocked the Trump administration from firing recently hired probationary employees on Thursday. The judge said the Office of Personnel Management lacks the power to fire employees.
The Details: A lawsuit filed by five labor unions and five nonprofit organizations argued the mass terminations violated the Administrative Procedure Act requirements and congressional laws that deal with agency hiring and firing practices. The ruling does not mean fired employees will be rehired or that future firings will not happen. “What it means in practical effects is the agencies of the federal government should hear the court’s warning that that order was unlawful,” Danielle Leonard, an attorney for the coalition, said.
For Context: A federal judge last week declined to stop the Trump administration from conducting layoffs and firing federal workers. Thousands of probationary employees have been fired so far.
How The Media Covered It: Fox News (Right bias) noted that the federal judge ruling last week "allowed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to remain on track with its mission of finding and slashing wasteful government spending." The Associated Press (Left bias) only quoted those who support the federal workers, noting that the Office of Personnel Management and Michelle Lo, an assistant U.S. attorney with the Department of Justice, declined to comment.
