On Tuesday, voters will go to the polls in Ohio to vote in the Republican Senate primary.

Key Details: RealClearPolitics (Center bias) suggests a tight race with State Sen. Matt Dolan leading businessman Bernie Moreno, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, by just 2% (33% to 31%). Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose is polling at 23%. The winner of the Republican primary will face Sen. Sherrod Brown in November. Brown is unopposed in the Democratic primary.

Key Quote: "If you want somebody who's going to be more liberal than Mitt Romney in the United States Senate, then vote for Matt Dolan," said Moreno at a rally on the eve of the primary.

For Context: The primary is being closely watched with the balance of power in the U.S. Senate at stake. Republicans are hoping to erase Democrats' 51-49 margin there in November.

How the Media Covered It: Sources across the political spectrum noted that the race is a test of Trump's grip on the Republican Party.

Donald Trump’s name is not on the ballot Tuesday in Ohio’s Republican Senate primary.

But his clout is very much on the line.

The former president and presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee endorsed Bernie Moreno, a former car dealer and blockchain entrepreneur, in a race that the campaigns treated as a toss-up in the closing days. Recent polling has shown a dead heat between Moreno and state Sen. Matt Dolan, whom Trump attacked as a “RINO” — or Republican in name only — at a rally Saturday near Dayton.

Voters head to the polls Tuesday in Ohio, where a closely watched and increasingly contentious Republican Senate primary has become a high-profile test of former President Trump's immense grip over the GOP.

The winner of the primary will face off in November's general election against one of the most vulnerable Senate Democrats in a race that may determine whether Republicans win back the chamber's majority.

Donald Trump's sway over Ohio Republicans will be tested in the state's U.S. Senate primary on Tuesday, when they decide whether to nominate a political newcomer backed by the former president to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown in November.

Republicans are looking to erase Democrats' 51-49 majority in the chamber, and face a geographical advantage as Democrats are defending a half-dozen seats in competitive states including Ohio.
