Democratic members of Congress are reviving a fight over President Biden's candidacy following a brief respite in the wake of Saturday's assassination attempt against former President Trump, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: Some lawmakers are uneasy about the Democratic National Committee's plans to forge ahead with a virtual roll call vote to nominate Biden weeks before the Democratic convention.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., pushed for the Democratic National Convention's delay as questions persist about President Biden's 2024 candidacy, according to multiple sources. 

Schumer spoke with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and both men agreed to urge the DNC to delay a virtual roll call planned for this month to officially nominate Biden, three sources told Fox News Digital. 

July 15 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden is on track to receive the official 2024 presidential nomination from fellow Democrats for a second term in a virtual vote in late July ahead of the party's national convention, despite calls for him to step aside, four people involved in the process told Reuters.

California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff on Wednesday urged President Joe Biden to exit the 2024 presidential election contest.

Schiff in a statement said that he had “serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November.”

“While the choice to withdraw from the campaign is President Biden’s alone, I believe it is time for him to pass the torch,” said Schiff, the Democratic nominee for a U.S. Senate seat from California who is a strong favorite to win in November.

When US Rep. Katie Porter of California failed to advance to the general election following a third-place finish in the state’s US Senate primary election earlier this month, she was quick to lash out, arguing she lost because “billionaires” spent money to “rig” the election.

Baseball legend Steve Garvey has edged ahead of U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff in California's U.S. Senate primary.

As of Wednesday morning, Garvey, a former 10-time MLB All-Star, led Schiff by an incredibly slim margin of just 4,801 votes with more than 5 million votes tallied — about 85% of expected returns.

"As California's votes are counted, it's clear that our message of unity, common sense, and compassion resonates across the state," Garvey said. "I am deeply honored by the trust and support shown in these preliminary results. 

California Democrat Katie Porter took a swipe at Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and special interest groups after losing the open Senate primary, suggesting that Schiff's campaign spent millions "peddling lies" and ultimately boosted the Republican in the race, former baseball player Steve Garvey, on Super Tuesday.

"We're standing three to one in TV spending and an onslaught of billionaires who spent millions peddling lies," Porter said in her concession speech Tuesday night. "And our opponent's spending more to boost the Republican than promoting his own campaign."

Concluding California’s most competitive U.S. Senate primary in a generation, Rep. Adam B. Schiff of Burbank and retired Dodgers All-Star Steve Garvey will square off in November to represent the Golden State in Washington.

After months of close campaigning, the results were definitive: The Associated Press called the race for Schiff less than half an hour after polls closed and at about 9 p.m. for Garvey. The other top Democratic challengers, Reps. Katie Porter of Irvine and Barbara Lee of Oakland, were running in third and fourth place, respectively.

Barring a significant upset, Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican Steve Garvey, a former Major League Baseball star, are set to emerge from California’s top two “jungle” primaries on Tuesday as the finalists for the open U.S. Senate seat previously held by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
