Amid the rise in populism, extremism, and polarization around the world, centrism is frequently dismissed by its critics as too poorly defined, too short on passion, too weak to serve as an effective response. But this misunderstands both political centrism and the dangerous trends it seeks to counter. In fact, centrism offers the most potent antidote to the excesses of populism.

Phil Wong used to reliably back incumbents in this liberal city. But in 2022, he voted to recall three left-wing school board members and a progressive district attorney, and in November he plans to cast his ballot for a tough-on-crime challenger to the current mayor.

ā€œI have a deep love for this city, what it was,ā€ said the 46-year-old son of a Chinese immigrant. ā€œI want to see what it can be again.ā€

Mitt Romney’s retirement shines a glaring spotlight on the potentially bleak future of the Senate’s ideological center in both parties. If Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema follow him out the door, it will get worse.

Manchin, a centrist Democrat, and the Independent Sinema are both still mulling whether to run again. Like Romney, they could be replaced by senators on either end of the ideological spectrum — almost surely a Republican in Manchin’s West Virginia.

A political organization called "No Labels" is intent on shaking up the 2024 presidential race. There's talk of creating a third-party unity ticket if the field of voters faces a choice of Joe Biden vs. Donald Trump once again.

The national co-chair of the group talked with CBN News about the way forward. Civil rights leader, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, an ordained minister and former CEO of the NAACP,  is navigating political waters to support this centrist effort.

Josh Gottheimer believes his caucus of centrists is going to play a key role getting important bills passed in a narrowly divided House.

On a bitterly cold night 14 months ago, an obstreperous Democratic congressman from New Jersey was sitting in the Capitol hideaway of House Democrats’ heir apparent, talking about trying to do the impossible.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s surprise announcement that she is registering as an independent is an epic gamble born of necessity. It’s probably her only chance at keeping her Arizona Senate seat beyond 2024. Yet even if she does run as an independent, winning reelection is far from guaranteed, to put it charitably.

Sinema — who alienated many Democratic voters through her opposition to large swaths of President Biden’s agenda — was certain to face a Democratic primary challenger in 2024. And she all but certainly would have lost.

The reverberations from Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s (Ariz.) announcement on Friday that she has left the Democratic Party and is now an Independent are being felt across the political spectrum, but especially in the Senate itself where lawmakers are evaluating how her decision will change the dynamics of the chamber.
