A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the New South Wales Hunter Valley early on Wednesday morning, jolting awake residents across a wide swathe of eastern Australia, including parts of Sydney and Canberra. A 4.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the NSW Hunter Region.

The large earthquake's epicentre hit near Singleton, 208km northwest of Sydney, but was felt by residents across Newcastle, Sydney and Canberra about 2.55am on Wednesday.

Michael Slater, a former Test cricketer for Australia, has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to domestic violence charges.
