Gun control generally refers to laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms. They vary greatly around the world. Some countries, such as the U.K., have very strict limits on gun possession while others, like the U.S., have, compared to most industrial democracies, relatively few restrictions (although policies vary from state to state).

In May 2012 lawyers for nine public school students filed the lawsuit of Vergara v. California in California state court. The suit alleged that several California statutes violated the California Constitution by retaining some grossly ineffective teachers and thus denying equal protection to students assigned to these teachers.
